A BFFSG Phenomenon

so this probably applies more to large cities with high numbers or forum members moreso than places with one fixie rider in the whole city, but i find myself going places and checking out bikes and wondering if the bikes owner is a forum member.

i was at great lakes in park slope tonight and saw multiple fixies go by outside, then left and saw an IRO chained up in front with several spoke cards, one being a Midnight Frostbite '05 card, and wondering who it belonged to.

kinda pointless thread but whatever! despite the drinks at great lakes being WEAK i have a pretty solid buzz happening.

LeWhiteRabbit 01-22-06 12:13 AM

i do that all the time...

now, i mean...cuz i've only been on here for like, 3-4 days...HA! but my man/boy is/was on here all the time, so even when i wasn't a member on here i was asking myself those Qs.

turd 01-22-06 12:26 AM

i've had a few BF'rs recognize me from my tattoo rather than my bike, which i find strange.. who else has such a wee ride?

i have to admit, i recognized you at a party during the Bike Film Festival because of your tattoo

ella 01-22-06 12:30 AM

not really. there's a particular peugeot conversion in my neighborhood that I've noticed and today I saw they guy who owns it riding down the street. I thought, "huh, so that's the guy that belongs to that bike."

I tend to remember bikes and forget the people who own them, unless they are equally interesting. I'm in brooklyn so I know my local BF freaks.

skelly 01-22-06 12:47 AM

I always think that because I see a ton of people posting from Philly but anytime I talk to someone and ask them if they're on bike forums they say "what's bike forums?"

jaypee 01-22-06 12:50 AM

Not many FG riders here, but I did notice a guy browsing the FGG in one of the computer labs I run. He saw me approaching and quickly minimized the window.

Hence the need for the "official" spokecard.

Seconded. I think it should look like an ID, with a place for you to write your screenname.

yep, i do that, too...but there are few of us in pdx. oh, well.

i agree we need official spoke cards with a spot for the username. hee hee, now that i'm thinking, i wonder if i've passed other pdx BF users on the streets and never known.

good idea. and this could also be that "secret handshake" thread for the secret bike group...

although if u read the secret santa spoke card thread often enough... that works well too

stendhalian 01-22-06 05:19 AM

told a fixie acquaintance at a party tonight that i posted a pic of my bike online and he gave me a strange look...the whole notion just flew over his head...

haha yeah, i was riding with a friend who is just a casual weekend sorta rider on a hybrid, and we were on roosevelt island in front of some nice scenery and i said "damn, i wish i had my camera so i could take a pic of my bike in front of that" and he made fun of me for the rest of the day. my response was "dude, you ride a hybrid. of course you don't want to take a picture of your bike."

i'm in brooklyn, and while i recognize a lot of bike forumers and bikes, i dont really know many of em cause i dont come out for the prospect park races or alley cats.

I know there are a bunch of BF members in Chicago. I don't know any of them, probably because I am at least twice their age on average and roll mostly on the South Side before sundown.
So if anyone from Chicago spots a 50-something dork wearing a Sox hat and riding a gold (rattle can job) Jamie Roy, that's me. Give me a wave or at least one finger up, hopefully the thumb.

DC_Emily 01-22-06 10:54 AM

The IRO with the frostbite spokecard might be s_9?

Sox?
Jamie Roy?
Rattlecan?
You sound cool as hell.

luggedwithlove 01-22-06 12:39 PM

speaking of cities and brooklyn, do any of ya'll live in sunset park or further south?

Rikardi151 01-22-06 12:44 PM

After reading this thread, I saw a fixie rider comin through my neighborhood, and I couldnt help but wonder if it was one of the members that lives here on spring garden. An official spokecard would be way cool. ALso... on other forums, you can have a pic of yourself in your profile. Is that available here? cause it would be cool to have a basic drive-side pic of the whole bike so that you can see what bikes to look for in your hood.

mrRed 01-22-06 12:50 PM

I was in San Francisco last week for two days and took a few pictures of various fixies and people riding on a coworkers camera. I'm hopin I can get a copy of 'em before they get deleted.

Yeah, there's a grip of fixed bikes here, but i don't see many BF users from ptown.
