Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Check out what I found

so tonight I'm headin out to the dumpster to remove last night's remenants, and what do my eye's find? An early 80's white Gitane road frame, one 700c front wheel, and a 27" wheel set.

My current thinking is that it's going to get a coaster brake and racks, it'll become my grocery getter.

any one know anything about these frames?

They are made of metal and when assembled you can pedal them down the road.

stamped dropouts would indicate lower end of gitane's line. you can look forward to french threading headaches, but beyond that, it's steel. nothing wrong with steel.

Is there a tubing sticker on it? You'll get better info on Classic and Vintage. I agree it appears to be low end. (Cottered cranks, etc.) But it's a GITANE!

Don't throw out the headset or bottom bracket. Do you have a stem? They are ever so slightly different than others.

I wouldn't put a lot of money into it, but it should be a fine grocery getter.

You can sand the .2mm off a "normal" threaded stem easily, if you can't get a French stem cheaply. You can also probably find a BB axle that will fit the existing cups if you want to convert to cotterless cranks.
