Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Didn't jesus toss the capitalists from the temple in the Bible? Why would he be any more pleased with them today. At least in the bible he was only concerned about location. Look what goes on today in the name of profits.......Jesus would **** and have his team of lawyers and lobbyists on the phone in no time.

i've had my eyes peeled for cops over the last few days and haven't seen anything out of the ordinary. i regularly ride on 1st, 2nd, and 6th aves in the houston-18th st range, so i figured i'd seem them if they were out, but not yet...

yeah i just left 2nd ave and didn't see anything funny. the cop didn't say when they would start ticketing. hopefully it's a false alarm but i'm still keeping my eyes peeled.

s_9 i love your avatar

and i retract my statment i didnt think cops would really go to that level when they could ticket us for other things that might actually make sense

ticketing quotas aren't supposed to make sense. they're supposed to make money and enemies.

all i was saying is that if a cop pulled you over why would he ticket you something for missing reflectors in the midle of the day when he could ticket you for not having a bell or breaks something that is required by law all the time you know?

they get you for everything they can think of. that said, it can work to your benefit. if they ticket you for things like lights and reflectors (which the statutes state are only necessary during a specific period of time), and you decide to fight the ticket, if you know the law, you can argue that the ticket wasn't written correctly.

speaking of reflectors, can't we just get some thin 3M reflectorized plastic, screenprint on it, laminate it and make spoke cards that double as reflectors?

i'm gonna try it. if it works and looks good, i'll drop a bunch off at trackstar for people to take for free. don't think i can get to it til next week though.

edit: ok. just ordered some sick 4" wide gold reflecorized tape and some pouches for the laminator. i'll come up with a design tonight.

that sounds like an expensive idea.... not sure if you're a graphic designer, but I'll assume you aren't. No offense, I mean, most people make the same assumption that the costs wouldn't be high. (To lay things down: I am a graphic designer by trade)... Let's put it this way, without doing too much research:

the 3M plastic won't be cheap... where'd you find the 4" tape? U-Line has 2" tape for cheapo (white reflective, too).
screens for screenprinting: you can find a shop to do them for you, saving time+money, but it will run at leat $15 per screen.
ink: ink that will adhere to that plastic isn't cheap. without looking at a catalogue, I can accurately guess it to be around $45 for a quart.
(BUT - you won't have to laminate!! the ink should be UV resistant and water and such... the plastic should be by itself anyway... save money there too)

I think the idea is fantastic - go for it, but you should consider finding a funding source or having them purchasable for a small fee (like $1.50 a pop if you're doing this pro-bono)

Again, great idea... just offering some helpful crit.

i have a screenprinting setup. i'm a designer. i got a 20' roll of 4" wide gold reflectorized tape for 30 bucks. i got 100 pouches for a laminator that i already have for 12 bucks. it's all a drop in the bucket.

so, it's all good!

Bikes: No Loaners for Slackers!

Last night I passed a cop car stopped on first ave and 3rd st. There was a mtn bike in the trunk and a guy in the back seat. We haven't heard any ripples over here at Times Up!, and we knew people who got tickets the first day (a tuesday) of last fall's blitz. Ride safe.
