I'm currently interviewing for a job 20 miles from my home. I'll have to take a metro link, then the metro, which will drop me off 3 miles from work. Metro doesn't allow bikes during peak hours. This is where the folding bike comes in...
Any of you converted (double bastard) these gnome-like bikes? i think all this (close to 1 hour) is better than sitting in a car for an hour+ in the most hellish traffic areas of Los Angeles. |
folding bikes are fun. Tiny Tiny wheels. but lots and lots of fun. Not sure if you can convert. seems like chain tension would be a ***** to maintain.
that peak hours **** is the worst...move to berlin!
in SF/Oakland i saw tons of folding bikes. It just looked ridiculous- A tall man in a suit on this tiny funny looking bike. I just can't take it seriously.
a really beater folding bike would be fun as hell.
Go take a look at the folding forums. There is at least one fixed folder. And yes, you can put on bullhorns and make a bike that's quick and nimble in traffic.
What next - a ss/fixie folding forum? |
The Strida looks sort of fun to me. At least, it doesn't try to look like a real bike. And it has belt drive, which is way cool. Except that I don't know if it can be fixed easily...
folding bike conversion= so terrible it's almost not terrible anymore.
I could just make a joke out of it and make it effed up looking so it's more funny than painful... The king of bastards |
I've got one in a box you can pick up at the port of Long Beach in about a month...
really?
TIP. Is that a team jersey you are wearing in the avatar. I dig those colors and must know.
Bike Friday actually make a fixed version. Sure they look silly, but they are actually nice riding bikes from what I hear.
Also, I've seen some folders converted to fixed on here in the past. Sheldon Brown has at least one fixed folder conversion. I think they are so weird they are cool. |
Should be a bit easier to find the fixed folder. I'm not linking directly to the thread, because that would only be enabling all you lazy bastards, but if you can find your way out of ss/fixie and into Folding, you'll find it.
Theres a pretty fresh (for a folder) fixed gear Dahon in Condor's window (London UK). There was also a thread about fixie folders just recently:
http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...ighlight=dahon That said. I would much prefer to ride anything than sit in bumper to bumper traffic. |
wow Expat, thank you!
You're welcome.

By the way, the last time I was in NYC, I took a great photo outside Coyote Ugly of a woman dressed for business in a black top and skirt, cruising the sidewalk on her Razor scooter. But that's not very California-like.

No, my wife might find that odd. But the one of the open top garbage-hauling truck with 3 Haitians riding in the back would be a keeper. That is if you enjoy social commentary.
as long as it comes from an expat.
razor or a folder
i'm speechless... at least there's no seqway option :D |
theres a girl around here who rides one of those little thingys, when i see it in public it doesn't seem that bad, but whenever i hear the term folding bike, my mental imagery jumps straight to a clown on a kids bike.
You could always keep a beater locked up at the station and just use it to get from there to your office and back.
thats a great idea.
