Alfred E. Bike and Loose Screws both have options for a decent headset for under $30.

Are you looking for a threaded or threadless headset? You can probably find threaded or threadless Campagnolo Chorus for less than $50 or a threaded Shimano 105 in the $30 range. Both decent headsets.

I saw several used Dura Ace 1" threaded pretty cheap on ebay, heck I picked mine up for ten dollars.

my (threadless OMAS) headset is old & gummed up. i bought it with my frame used. i know absolutely nothing about headsets, and am pondering two choices: buy a new headset, or; clean up the OMAS. i am not a (competitive) track rider, however i ride pretty seriously through the streets of nyc (100mi/week). if i am to purchase a new headset, is there any reason to drop the $'s on a really good one?
