Los Angelinos

Tell me all about your town.
Bike culture?
Where to go?
What to do?
Anybody hiring a Chemist?
Does LA suck as bad as I hear?

Some unfortunate life circumstances have rendered me "free" once again. I have a few friends out there with whom I can stay. They are, however, disconnected with the bike culture and that is why I ask here. I will likely be there in the not so distant future. My visit could range from 1 week to 1 month to...more? 1 week would be a vacation. 1 month would be a scouting mission. More than that would be a job. Most people think I'm an idiot for these ideas, but the way I see it, I don't know when I'll be "free" again, so...I'm entertaining a lot of stupid ideas and I'm going to do my best to enjoy them.

This guy is crazy, LA is the most wonderful place. I can not think of any place I would rather be, maybe southern France. The bike culture here is amazing, you just have to ride, if you dont actually ride, we will not be your friend.

Every time I watch "Heat" I want to go to LA.

But that's pretty much the only reason...

roadfix 02-06-06 10:11 PM

$1 Asada tacos, carnitas, burros, cocktails, Coronas, sushi, pupusas, In-N-Out, okonomiyaki.....L.A.'s the place...

I think that movie just about sums up everything LA is about. And answers any question you might have...oh that and Point Break.

And Sloppy does not mean that, he is probably just pissed you would even listen to the people that you heard that from. Most people who say that, know nothing about LA.

You are full of it, LA is weak sauce. Listen to what everyone from SF says, it sucks.

LA is okay for it's bike culture. It isn't as big, or tight as NYC, perhaps, but there is a strong bike culture. Go here for some Urban bike events:

http://www.bikeboom.com/webcalendar/month.php

Also, a lot of bike events are centered around the Bicycle Kitchen:

http://www.bicyclekitchen.com

Otherwise, if you're in road cycling, there are plenty of rides around, many of them very competitive and hamerfests. Go here for more info on those:

http://socalcycling.com/

Plus, there are plenty of off-roading opportunities in the Santa Monica mountains or the Angeles National Forest.

If you decide to move, welcome!

Oh mann, you are killing me. That is where you lay your head, dont scare the fresh meat off.

junioroverlord 02-06-06 11:11 PM

Wow, I have to disagree with how tight the community here is. We're WAY tight in all seroiusness. Unlike NY we're very spread apart geographically and we're quite large. We average around 300 for Midnight Ridazz every month, and I have no problem finding a casual ride on just about any given night.

Everyone is welcoming and cool with no posenger issues that I hear coming from people in other cities. Here if you ride, you're in and we love you.

sloppy robot 02-06-06 11:17 PM

hippie

Nachoman 02-07-06 12:02 AM

The bike community is cool no matter where you are.

countem...
1. way too hot weather in mid late summer
2. smog
3. traffic
4. roads not built to accomodate cycling
5. drivers that hate cyclists
6. way too many "baja'ed" out 20foot tall monster trucks
7. and many more

lived in LA prefer the SF, just my opinion.

but we dont have the SF treatment, that is better than all the donts

gtboy 02-07-06 04:17 AM

I think LA's bike culture isn't elitist only because in LA, "bike culture" equals "bike kitchen." Those guys aren't elitists, but the rest appear to be.

Oh yeah, and echo park is an infernal cesspool of dirty hipsters that wouldn't know prada from pringles.

Placid Casual 02-07-06 06:12 AM

I liked Echo Park better when I was a little kid and it was full of hippies and Mexicans. It's still OK, though.

Cout em

1) Don't be a sissy.
2) Our air quality isn't much worse than any other metropolitian area, contrary to popular belief
3) What? We're on bikes.
4) Not true at all.
5) They hate cyclists everywhere and we hate them too
6) What are you smoking?
7) You have yet to name one.
