first of all, you mentioned sailor moon in the presence of ranma and (gasp) evangellion (which i'm sure you 1) never watched all the way through, and 2) aren't smart enough to get anyhow) and that's just criminal.

second of all, what you see on network tv is not the depth and breadth of anime. saying anime is like saying "movies" anime is not a genre it's a form of media. there's really good anime and really dumb anime, just like there are really good movies and really bad movies.

watching anime doesn't require any intellect, regardless of whether it has any other merits or not. sure, some have complex plots and involve some social commetary, but it doesn't take much to see it. your pretension is even stuffier than any generalizations that i might be making. please.

well, perhaps we're using the term differently. just to be sure, "anime" refers specifically to japanese animation. certainly there is plenty of room for variety when the terms are defined so loosely, but, in practice, the term "anime" is defined as, and refers to, a style of animation that emerged out of japan. it's not a "form of media" and is far less inclusive than the term "movie." indeed, there are many different genres of "anime," but they are all linked together by aesthetic and, in most cases, plot similarities. as with any style, there are examples that evince all of the major tropes and those that only display one or two.

if i am repulsed by the style, which i am, it is nevertheless still possible to be consistent and enjoy some of the outlier cases that are divergent from the crap that is the norm. the norm consisting of **** like gundam, robotech, ranma, evangelion, macross, akira, ghost in the shell, ah my goddess, la blue girl, urotsukidoji (or any of the hentai/ero ****), etc. i can watch a miyazaki movie from time to time and recommend them -- movies like my neighbor totoro and kiki's delivery service -- to people who have children and want family movies that aren't the standard crap.

i'm certainly a nerd in my own right, no doubt, but i cannot even begin to compare to anime fans. having worked in an independent video store known for its expansive selection of anime, i can say, by and large, that anime fans are some of the biggest losers that i've ever seen. of course there were some exceptions, but the "regulars" were all total and absolute ******bags. they're the same people who buy japanese porn magazines and photobooks from jlist. in the late 90s (well, more like early '00s), after the miyazaki stuff took off more in the states, we even moved his stuff out of the "anime" section and put it into the regular "animated" section because it rented better there and was the place where most people first looked. the anime section (like anime sections everywhere) consisted of a bunch of bad OVA (which is pretty much everything), the 80s boom movies, the **** that's been on american tv, a ton of hentai, and a few one-off movies that are respectable - like the aforementioned grave of the fireflies. notably, almost everyone who was an anime regular would pick up and rent the hentai **** on occasion. importantly, too, it wasn't as though they were just renting one of the classics for ****s and giggles, they were renting the new releases and more obscure titles.

fugazidave - ****, you're right. i knew that it was ghibli, but alas. it's been about 10 years since i've seen it. it was good. the live action japanese anti-war stuff is far better, though - the burmese harp, fires on the plain, or something newer like black rain (not the ridley scott crap).

this all said, there is no defense for the original poster wanting a decal of "the pinup anime babe leaning over a bicycle with big boobs. Preferably the purple haired chick from Evangelion" on his bicycle. sketch.

i'm not going to succeed in convincing anyone that they are a ******bag for liking what they do, but, i don't mind having anime fans dislike me. i'm better off for it.

there's some real oddball characters out there, to be sure. DC is hosting a big anime convention this weekend and it's gonna be a freaky scene down there - a real spectacle to behold (or run far away from)

well said shants, i was expecting you to just call me a dooche and be done with it. props on your thought and restraint. for the most part i agree with you. i just don't like the fact that you were boiling down an entire genre to what some american toadies are renting from a video store. i understand that that may be the definition of anime here tho.
i am not actually an "anime fan", but i have enjoyed a few things. manga is way better in most cases tho. even akira is crap comared to the manga, and what was done with ghost in the shell and appleseed is unforgivable but i'll spare you the nerd talk.

to sum up, the OP's decal of choice IS pretty gross.

anyway, i have no beef with this discussion either way, but your stance doesn't necessarily require much more of an explanation than: adults who watch cartoons are "******bags". it also begs to be pointed out that credit was only extended towards ghibli films, wheras the significance of miyazaki's critical acceptance doesn't escape me. hell shants, even ghost in the shell was admitted to cannes. most of what you say just reeks of snobbery.

(i would also just like to call out your over-extension of the term "******bag". it should not be applied to your normal everyday pool of geeks, dweebs, nerds, goons, noobs or haxorz; but more spcifically to hipster kids with backwards hairdos, metrosexuals with zippered boots, artfags with hip tattoos and/or other persons who may fall loosely under the definition of "waste-oid".)
