Hey everybody It's still OK to post about ebay
Given the controversy over the locking of the Ebay/CL sticky, I decided to search in the rules, and see if there is anything in there that specifically prohibits talking about ebay. There is not.
It is against the rules to post your items for sale unless you are a paid member, and then only in the For Sale section, but there is nothing in there that prohibits discussion about ebay auctions, or any other items for sale.
Now the mods may see fit to lock any thread for any violation of the rules, but there is no reason why we cannot post about ebay auctions as long as we follow them.
There should not NEED to be a disclaimer in the sticky that says "don't post your stuff here" because there is when we sign up we have to say we read and understand the rules. Failure to read or understand the rules is not an excuse for not following them.
So as far as I can see, a mod is completely justified for deleting a post which advertises an item for sale by the poster, especially if the poster represents a business, but as long as we play by the rules, we have nothing to fear talking about what's for sale on ebay, or at IRO, or Chucksbikes or whatever.
So stop whining that you lost your sticky. If you see something on ebay of Craigslist you want to post about, go ahead, start a thread for it. That damn sticky was unwieldy anyway. In fact I'm not so sure I care for stickies at all. If it's not fresh let it slide off the page. Who wants to sift through a thread 50 pages long. Has anyone else noticed that when a stickied thread shows up in a search you are hard pressed to figure out which page of the thread the relevant posts are? I'd much rater use the search feature on individual threads even if they ARE repetitive.

i agree about it being unwieldly. hell, i've hardly even looked at the picture thread for that reason. if it were all pictures, it'd be better, but so many pages of sifting, especially if you're looking for an individual bike or trying to get ideas for your ride.

Its not in the rules, but it appears to piss off the people that run this site if somehow something someone from the forums is selling gets posted and the seller is not a paid member.
What would be useful is a for sale forum/thread hosted someplace besides for BF. That would get around the problem mentioned above.

I think they only care when it turns into a sales pitch. I think "hey that's mine" is fine, and "hey that's mine, and it's really great you should buy it" is not. Fine line? Only if you're dense or intentionally playing dumb.

but now we'll end up with 5000000000000 threads about individual things popping up on ebay - which is why the sticky was created in the first place.

I used to love checking out the ebay thread. It's fun to see what other people think are good deals.
