Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Chances are, they used red loctite. Its meant to be removed with heat. One of the red formulas (212 maybe) isn't meant to be removed at all. The blue stuff, however, is good. Only takes a little extra effort to remove the part.

Bingo. Blue locktite on bike bolts you don't want bakcking off. Works great on lockrings and BB cups too. It doesn't really make loosening things harder, but you do have to "break" the initial bond to get it moving.

It would have been hard to apply heat to a wheel.

teadoggg you may end up keeping those wheels. I investigated the option of putting normal wheels (the nice mini wheels of that time) but its a big job and cost prohibitive to go from knock offs to normal wheels, Im guessing it would be the same to go the other way.

I put lockwashers on my chainring bolts and they stopped loosening after that.

star-type. I actually tried split first but they didn't stay tight.
