Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

has anybody ever

I was riding tonight to pick up a beer, beer is good. For some reason while stopping the toe of my shoe became engaged in the drive train, and around the sprocket it went. Zip, the toe of my shoe is gone, my toes remain, thank god. At least converse are cheap, fixed gears have no soul (sole?), my road bike would not have destroyed my chucks. Off to adjust my clipped toe straps...

Frankly, I really don't know how it happened either. I think my right foot drifted slightly inward and managed to rest on the chain. After that my shoe was violently ripped from my foot and was torn in half. Thank god for loose laces. Of course I am a stupid cyclist, so that doesn't help. I am riding on platforms until my clips come in the mail, that could have something to do with it. Just a thought.

It sounds like your shoelaces got eaten by your drivetrain. To avoid this I don't leave any flapping laces by making one bow and making another with remaining lace.
