Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

There are three of us planning to pirate the last two days. I don't feel like doing the whole RAGBRAI this year. I've done it seven times and the last couple have stricken me with higher levels of commercialism and less down home-ism. Otherwise RAGBRAI is still fun.

Let us know.

Am reviving this old/dead thread to see if anyone here is actually going to RAGBRAI. I'm not signed up, but am really wanting to ride it. Did it many years ago in hammer-mode. That was fun, but this time I plan on doing it fixed, in beer-and-porkchops mode. Not being preregistered means (I think) poaching and therefore hooking up w/a group that can transport gear etc.

Any whackos here up for doing this spur of the moment?

Anybody have any tips on how to jump on this at such a late date?

Thx.

PS: It starts this weekend.

Darn, I'll still be in Atlanta, or will I be back in time? When does it start? Or maybe I should just look it up.

New Illinois bike ride will tag onto RAGBRAI
By Peter Rugg of the Muscatine Journal

MUSCATINE, Iowa —- For at least 18 cyclists, dipping their tires in the Mississippi River won’t be the end of their journey but rather a milestone on their way to downtown Chicago.

In an attempt to capitalize on the success of RAGBRAI, officials at Bicycle Illinois are holding the first Northern Illinois Ride this year, coinciding with the end of RAGBRAI, the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa.

“We’re piggybacking right on the end of RAGBRAI and we’ll be heading to Chicago over four days,” said Robert Layton, ride director of Bicycle Illinois.

Layton said they had 38 people signed up for the ride to downtown Chicago as of Monday, July 17, with roughly 50 percent of those riders planning to continue on from RAGBRAI’s July 29 finish in Muscatine.

The Northern Illinois Ride will officially depart from Muscatine at 6 a.m. on Sunday, July 30, and end on Wednesday, Aug. 2.

“We saw having 10,000 people on our doorstep as a great opportunity to start something new,” Layton said.

Although this will be the first Northern Illinois Ride, Bicycle Illinois has done cross-state treks from southern to northern Illinois for the last three years.

Information on the Northern Illinois Ride can be obtained online at www.bicycleillinois.com. Ride officials can be contacted at 877-TOUR-ILL.
It's only a few more days if you're heading back to Chi after the ride....
