Eastwestmag (eastwestmag.com) Is an Chinese/English Language lifestyle magazine published in Taipei.
They are doing an article on the history, current state and future of urban cycling fashions and its influence on mainstream youth fashion. All the normal luminaries are on board. Anyone want to chime in on this?

Bike caps, fixies, rolled up jeans, PUMA, Adidas, cycling shoes, Air Squids, Ninja bikes, Pistas, NJS, Hot rodding, hiplocks,Kevin Bacon, youth medium t-shirts, BMX, Futbol Jersies, stupid practices, Reload, Surly, Custom, the pros and cons of chrome,Welding caps, and, oh yeah, bags...

Thoughts?
This is our chance to represent in the land where everything is made.

One assumes they would want an Asian, or Asian-American (or Asian-Australian, Asian-British, and so forth) perspective.

You don't see articles by Laura Bush in Essence.

Oh yeah, Knickers.

How do folks feel about these? They were made for a bit but never caught on big. Just the kind of thing that gets picked up elsewhere.

Also, black military caps in Berlin and 686 tool belts.

Helmets? Roadie, Mountain, BMX, football?

The same trackbike/messenger look that has caught on in Brooklyn is making its way around the world and the editor in Taipei asked for a piece on this trend in America.

WTF is this "they" you are refering to? Asians in general? or do you have a particular country in mind? Is this one of those idiotic 'asian-american' magazines that only non-asian-americans read and feels that it keeps them in touch with the asian-american culture? I love the generalizations you've made... What exactly is the region where people bike and idolize american bikers?

Your posts repeats many that already exist so please do some of us a favor and do a search before you start another thread.

The magazine is called eastwest, it is a chinese language lifestyle magazine printed in Taipei, R.O.C. All articles are printed in both languages.

It is an Asian Magazine, a magazine from Asia.

If you have an opinion worth considering please share it, otherwise, please get out of the way. If you think fashion is dumb then say so. Even better, offer alternative examples.

the fact you make sweeping generalizations is what bothers me. nowhere in your original post do you mention that this is a magazine from Taiwan. this goes for a lot of numerous other posts you have started.

IMHO, this sentence makes you out to be a seriously closed minded individual. you may not know this, but there are plenty of Asian publications that are made in the US.

furthermore, your last post equates Taiwan with Asia. please stop for a second and try to compose a well thought-out post, and maybe you can get your point across.

are you some kind of failed sociology student or something?

I am getting really tired of the ignorant and difficult folks who seem to have all the time in the world to insult but don't see an opportunity when it is right in front of them.

If you have an opinion worth considering please share it, otherwise, please get out of the way. If you think fashion is dumb then say so. Even better, offer alternative examples.

Roland of Reload, Jon of Baileyworks and a string of other communtiy leaders have already helped out.

What is wrong with you, why is your community so hostile?
Wow! so many things wrong with this guy, I don't even know where to start...

lets start from the bottom up. WHAT COMMUNITY??? forum? fixy? hipster? coherent? non-dimwitted?

What has reload and bailey and other 'community leaders' helped out with? The two you mentioned are great guys, but you need to have a context as to what you are trying to refer to so we don't sit infront of the screen scratching our heads like the idiots that you think we are.

We do have opinions and we state them, sometimes too much but we definately do have opinions, if nothing else and if you're too slow to extract it from our seemingly blunt replies, then sorry, can't help ya there. Nobody said fashion is dumb, we all like our own sense of fashion and agree and disagree with others, but we are still too awed by your idiotic post to concertrate on whatever point about asian wannabes you are trying to make. Guess I need to 'get out of the way'... OF WHAT???

the only ignorant and difficult folk I can see here is you with your pointless threads(plenty of those, fine, but yours is especially self-important which annoys me) and your refusal to realize that you have not made an valid point yet... in any thread.

Asian magazine... so it must be from asia? what about the countless other that are published in the US?

Okay, fine, it's a mag published in Taiwan... so that means when you said 'a region where people ride bikes' you meant Taiwan? WTF? have you been there? are you confusing it with pretty pictures of china or vietnam you see on whatever travel mag you've been reading in the doctors office? I was in Taiwan 6 monthes ago and aside from people riding to the subway stations, there aren't many bikers on the streets, no more than NYC or other major cities, if anything, less. It's a crazy city to drive in much less bike and there are an insane number of scooters and motorcycles so people don't use bikes to get around.

Before you start spewing ignorant assumptions, please check your facts and resist the urge to type anything.

And please, I know we post a lot of dumb threads, but your definately not helping matters with 'what are you reading' and 'food! it's your fuel'... DO A SEARCH!! they've been done.

END RANT.

one more thing... when I was in taiwan, china, and hongkong, I didn't see anyone trying to copy the messenger look... I was the only person that had a messenger bag and people were pretty amused and impressed by it cuz it's something new, so I guess these 'young' people in asia must've caught on in the last 6 monthes pretty quickly. Hey, maybe I started the trend...

Damn it, I though I started that trend

But sadly, I doubt that neither The Wangster nor I would be the subject of any interest to an article about American trends in an "Asian" magazine. People overseas copy faces that do not look like their own.

I am talking about a magazine that is published in Taipei for affluent, chinese speaking young men in Pacific rim nations. Even better, why don't you go to eastwestmag.com and see what they are. The magazine is produced and distributed in Asia, therefore it is Asian. An Asian magazine produced in the US (while marketed through the concept of Asian) is technically an American magazine, despite its marketing towards asian americans. Similarly, the economist is a european mazine, while a magazine on european issues, produced in the US for American readers is still an American magazine.

I am writing an article, I invited folks to include their thoughts in the article.

Look,
I am tired of this pattern of people trying to one up each other. I was told this was a useful place to come and talk to other fixie, single speed riders. I am a teacher with fifteen years of bike mechanic/sales experience and have been riding in traffic for seventeen years. I have trained police, bike messengers and inner city youth. I teach bike PE classes and have run a non-profit youth run bike shop here in DC. I may be redundant with the threads as I don't spend much time on bike forums or any other.
They seem to waste time.

However, all of my threads are legitimate.
There is a growing resentment towards outsiders crashing alleycats.
Like any other party, no one minds if you are cool and bring something to the table. But as more and more people are showing up there are more opportunities for irritation. I am trying to head off a problem. A number of hubs of the DC messenger community though tthis was a good idea, the only doubt was in the reception it would recieve in this forum.
Disgree if you want, but please be good guests when you race and party.

We cook for each other so a food thread makes sense.

I read, you read, what is good?

The lock article is going to be published and the author was kind enough to consider the impact of his article on the cycling community.

I had a legitimate question about bookmaking in Japan, no previous thread existed.

Please restrict your comments to useful precise responses or keep them to yourselves. Or go out on the street on learn how to be polite in conversation with strangers. My 11 year old students might be able to give you pointers.

By community I mean the folks that spend their time online sniping at anyone who comes along asking questions. I am a longtime veteran of all aspects of bike world, the only thing that is new to me is the hostility.

I am writing an article, I invited folks to include their thoughts in the article.
However, there seems to be more interest in sniping at me, than doing something useful.

Why?

If anyone has anything useful to contribute, send me a personal message
WOW!!! big list... are you trying to impress us with your worldliness? does knowing someone of a certain ethnic background make you sensitive or knowledgable about that certain group? I know a lot of latinos and I can honestly say that I still don't know the first thing about latino culture, at least not as much as I'd like to know or should know.

How are we suppose to know what 'asian' magazine is suppose to mean? You gave no real background about this magazine and jumped into some random questions.

we don't snipe at anyone that ask a question, just people that ask ignorant ones... we love dumb questions and we love newb questions, and apparently your no newb so I'll take your word on that, but your question was so ill concieved and contained so many assumptions that I just had to chime in.

First of all... affluent chinese young men have no interest in messenger culture, trust me on that... young men in asia with the tiniest bit of affluence will ditch a bike and go with at least a scooter.

I would love to see this article that you're gonna write to the affluent chinese speaking young men of asia... because your so obviously qualified from knowing so many asians and people of 'color'.

Sorry dude, dropping names and countries just makes you the biggest ******bag ever...

I started this thread to get peoples thoughts on bike culture and fashion.
Instead, we are debating something involving identity politics among Americans.
The editor of the magazine is interested in bike culture, he is interested because his readers are interested.

Cycling is big in many parts of Asia, this is an opportunity to break the old dichotomy of poor people ride/rich people drive, a vital issue in a region with new wealth and the vast majority of the human population.

Anyone want to throw in their two-cents?
