Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

That's exactly it. The same properties that harden the contact patch and repel sharp objects seem to lend to a very slippery ride in the wet. Add to that the fact that these tires ride like rocks (super-stiff, reinforced sidewall) and what you have is a set of tires that you need to be careful with over damp manhold covers, grating, paint stripes and so on. Sharp turns are a bit of an adventure even on wet pavement.

so in the end, you DO have to sacrifice durability over traction/comfort?

Not at all. It just depends how fast you want to go. Look around at 28-32 commuting tires, or 28 randonneuring tires.

And welcome to bikeforums. = )

Vittoria Rubino's are a good compromise between durability and handling. They aren't as durable or flat-resistant as an armadillo, but they have great handling and have a kevlar belt to prevent flats.

I've been running a rubino on my front wheel since august and I've never flatted it (knock on wood). It has a lot of cuts in it from glass and such, but nothing has penetrated deep enough.

In the past, I have ridden with an all-conditions Armadillo in back.
I have never had a flat front tire.

In the past two years, with Armadillos in back, I have had two flats; both from very fine, sharp wire.

I ride with a stickier all-weather tire in front, and have never had a front flat.

I weigh 215, and sometimes 235 with bag.
