are you joking? avoid the tenderloin? come on. the mission has far more violence, muggings, and other crime. i've been witness to at least seven shootings in 2006 alone when in the mission. on the other hand, i have been living in the tenderloin for a number of years and have not once heard peep of a mugging or murder, or even shots fired. sure, the tenderloin has some junkies, but they are junkies that do their own thing. gangs attack people, junkies just want drugs.. big difference.

hmm, i love all of western addition and i don't go to north beach for fun (except that pizza place a friend took me that i forgot where it is) but that's just my personal opinion.
oh and...richmond rocks - so many good restaurants and close to GG park.
i live in lower haight and do not recommend living here if you have a car. that is, also, my personal experience-based opinion.

Okay. I admit I am biased toward the Mission since I live here and love it and I have never lived in Western Addition or the Tenderloin. It was unfair of me to judge a neighborhood I have no true knowledge of. But come on, North Beach has the poety readings, comedy clubs, dark seedy bars and culture! But I digress, sorry to generalize and assume. I like the Mission.

+1

I think if I moved back to the city, I'd be digging the inner richmond as well.

If only green apple could stop spiralling downward for a bit..

drac_vamp 03-29-06 05:14 PM

the tenderloin is great. it wasn't so good like 5 years ago when it was filled with boring hipsters. thankfully they have filed out and are filling up the mission now :) tenderloin is smooth sailing.

low rent, high life.

nah don't worry about it. when i said i'm no fan of north beach as fun place, i meant it more in the line of those tourist-filled bars (sorry tourists, but when you're on vacation, you tend to take *crazy* a little too far) and sleazy drunk people (though they are pretty much everywhere). you're right there are some bars that locals go to and i have never had any bad experiences at those bars. my friend bartens at the cobbs comedy club and i like that place (+ free booze) a lot. i like north beach when it's sunny too.

western addition was kind of boring/sketchy for a while but it's changing. new bars/restaurants opened up and a lot of my friends started to move to that neighborhood. the other day, my friend told me he's painting some mural on the wall of this new restaurant that's opening up on divis @ hayes. i can't wait to see it.

tenderloin's awesome - my friend moved there and she said crackheads compliment her every time she comes out of her building. this almost never happens in my neighborhood (either that or i'm just not compliment-worthy).

oh and mission - i love tree-filled folsom street. it's so refreshing in sf. york street has some colorful buildings and it cheers me up everytime i go to st. francis and such. (oh and did i mention pops??) i am fed up with the construction going on on valencia though.

i'm really sad i forgot where that pizza place in north beach is...they put fried egg on top of pizza and that was one of the best pizza i've ever had.

Mouton 03-29-06 05:27 PM

tenderloin kills the mission for crime statistics
http://www.sfgov.org/site/police_index.asp?id=23813

just as an example:
in the last 14 days, the number of Homicide, Aggravated Assault, Forcible rapes:

Tenderloin: 21
Mission: 11

kludge 03-29-06 05:28 PM

my lease is running out and I'm ALSO looking for a place to live in the city and im in the same boat...i cannot go over 600....but to the OP check out oakland north/temescal. its super chill, its like oaklands response to the mission minus the violence. its still in a funny stage, lots of young people, a few H*****s. and you would be a five minute ride away from montanovelo...the best shop(for expensive ass sh it) in oakland besides the bent spoke(the best spot for everything repair related). yah.

ostro 03-29-06 05:35 PM

Its all about the richmond...we have the park, the beach, the peace and quite, restaurants, a few bars, the fog horns.

drac_vamp 03-29-06 05:38 PM

these are statistics that are reported. the seven shootings i have seen in the mission just this year alone probably wont be listed there, as no one reports violent crimes in the mission. anyone recall the huge gang wars of the past two years? carried out exclusively in the mission. i'm not knocking the mission at all, i am just trying to scrub the tenderloin of its bad rep. sure, if you want a tranny prostitute or some speed, come to the tenderloin. we also have pill hill. no stabbings, shootings, or gang wars going on among the junkies though. some robberies, sure. i didn't see any statistics on that site to choose to filter for robberies carried out with a weapon vs. ones carried out without one. junkies don't have knives or guns. gang members, on the other hand, usually do. when my bike was in the cross fire of a drive by at pops, the dudes that were shot at simply got up and dusted themselves off. then they hopped in their car, and shot at more dudes about 15 minutes later. that night gun shots could be heard up and down different blocks. fun.

don't forget 17th and capp for prostitutes and crack...

...and uptown!

drac_vamp 03-29-06 05:43 PM

they cleaned up capp street like 4 years ago! come to divas at post and polk. we traded the hipsters for the trannies.

last year, there was a street fair (forgot which one, i was there for chicken on a stick) and my friend parked her car on 17th & capp. when we returned, there were 2 crack prostitutes (they were probably teenagers but looked like 40+ years old) peeing on my friend's car.

that totally made our day.

drac_vamp 03-29-06 05:46 PM

nice! the residents used to drop bricks on the prostitutes from their roofs. even the church joined in.

Well do you want the San Francisco or the Berkeley experience? They are quite different.

katio 03-29-06 07:04 PM

But when you're on 24th and San Jose and you look up to see the fog part around the mission at Sutro Tower while the sun is kissing your shoulders, it's a wonderful feeling. And oh man do I feel you on Valencia looking and feeling like a war zone and Folsom being the best sunny day street to ride down. I've never been to this Pop's you all speak of though.

o_O!!

pops is on 24th/york. cheap drinks, good people and bartenders, photo booth and pool table (one of which is ms. pacman arcade table), and nasty bathrooms. i love that place. they had an anniversary last weekend, and i ended up missing it. ugh.
