Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

I wonder if we'll ever see one scratched, used, locked to a post with a fender and spoke cards on the streets of some big city.

where do you ride a bike like that? a bike trail? but i wouldnt ride that bike on a limestone trail, the chain would get a messed up, and the frame dirty..

Personally, I think the integrated bar/stem deal looks a little funky. Like, in a bad way.

That thing is luscious! I want to lick it!

Vanillas are usually a bit over the top for me, and I'll never understand integrated stem/bars, but they are all gorgeous.

I imagine MOST Vanillas lead a pampered life, and don't get ridden like they should, but I'm sure there are some Vanilla owners out there who ride the **** out of them. I know I've seen pics on here of one with some signs of riding on it.

A bike like that is gorgeous new, but a bit TOO gorgeous. I know I'd have a problem putting the first scratch on one if I owned it, but once it was broken in and showing signs of wear I think I would love it even more. I wouldn't have to feel so bad about riding it like a bicycle, and I could just enjoy it.

Did you say tig?

There's a photo that a few people have seen -- it was from last year's Monstertrack during the swap meet I believe and I can't seem to find it but it's a famous photo of sorts of a cream Vanilla that was really beat up - paint scratched, etc. It was beautiful. I think the hub was even a Chub.

can a new bike be TOO gorgeous? every Schwinn Paramount that came off the line 30 years ago looked just as perfect, no doubt. But I agree that getting a scratch on such a bike would be heartbreaking, but neccessary. it's probably not unlike having one's first child. As a newborn you want to wrap the entire world in bubble wrap and wipe it with sanitizer... and then your kid starts crawling around and eating cat hair and bumping into the wall headfirst. And you love 'em even more.

Could be either, both fillet brazing and two-pass tig welding (that is, a beaded root pass followed by a "washout" pass) yeild a similarly smooth joint.

Either way, very nice.
