Handlebar Shellac - # Coats?

So I decided to go the cloth tape/shellac/twine route with my handlebars. I have them wrapped, and so far they're looking great and I'm pretty excited. I have 7 coats of shellac on them right now and am starting to think they're ready for use. Having never shellaced my bars before, how many coats are typically used for a first application?

I usually do only three or four. But you can do as many as you like.

whats the point of shellac? i never understood. just seems like a lot of work for slippery bars.

astrx, it was a rainy weekend so i thought i'd give it a try. after riding around with it today i think i'm with you, a lot of work for slippery bars. i'm going back to some regular tape soon, not to knock it, but it just wasn't for me.
