Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Wow. Check out these Schwinn cruisers.

Ok. There are quite a few 3 speeds, and a few with even more but these are nice.

Man, they knew how to name bikes back then. Jaguar, Tiger, Typhoon, Tornado, Hollywood...

The new Santa Cruz mountain bike is called the Nomad. Worst. Name. Ever. It's an all-mountain bike with 6 inches of travel on each end, and they give it a name fitting for a Hybrid with a basket on the front. Take a lesson from Schwinn, SC, and call it the Puma. Rant over.

But, a Nomad is a person with no fixed home, that wanders all over the place, very independent and travel-worthy. That name is pretty fitting for an all-mountain bike, IMO.

I've trash-picked the following:

- Racer
- Typhoon
- Collegiate x 3
- Breeze x 2

all were fixed and given away, or donated to a bike co-op

I know what a Nomad is, thank you. That's why it's a ******** name for a mountain bike. If they were going to go for that image, they could have at least called it "The Hobo", which is funny. Nomad still sounds like a grandma bike.

https://saltlakecity.craigslist.org/bik/148775981.htmlWould this be a good fixie project?

I want to build one (have one built) for my first fg/ss ride. I don't want to buy one of those motobecane/windsor/mercier jobs as so far what I have read here about them is they are crap.
so I been looking at cheap bikes to convert
What are your ideas about this bike?

What would you do with it specifically?

Thanks for helping out a noob

yes and no. Those frames are heavy as **** for starters. You would want standard three-piece cranks instead of that old steel one-piece crank, and the two are not interchangable in any easy manner. You'll need either a new rear wheel or to relace the rim to a track hub to get a proper fixed-gear bike. The price is also waaaay too high for the bike as-is, and waaaaaaaaaaay too high if you're just going to gut it for the frame and convert it.

It could be done, but there are tons of better options out there. Find someone with an old road bike (not a cruiser) in their garage for cheap/free and start from there instead. You'll save a lot of money and get a nicer finished product than with that suburban.

Bikes: highly modified specialized crossroads and GT hybrid (really a [formerly] 12-speed bmx cruiser, made before 'hybrid' took on its current meaning), as yet unmodified redline 925, couple of other projects

+1 that the frames are heavy and expensive and he could do way better, but the one-piece crank neither needs to be replaced nor would be difficult to replace.

Ugh, I sold an old Schwinn on CL last week for $60! It needed a lot of work though and I bought it a police auction for $17 with the intention of building it up but lost interest. When I rode it to meet the seller, I was surprised at how smooth a ride it was; maybe another will grace my garage one day soon.
