1. casati road bike from 80s, 10 speed (my bling bike that i rarely take out).
2. 60s mercier, converted (commuter/beater/bar hopper which is turning into an expensive beater)

acquiring another soon....soon.... (but i'm really picky)

You should head over to the Roadie forum for answers to questions like these. Some hilarious threads of guys paying more attention to their bikes than to their wifes/gf's. Custom and vintage road bikes get built into works of art that make one drool.

I physically own 300 bikes, new and used.

But then I own a bike shop..

High end, I think I used to have at least 5 to 6 on hand.. I realized I just needed one. Now I usualy end up just riding something that belongs to the shop (ie me) or my cinelli.

That's sort of an odd question. I don't think for any of us here that a bike is just a bike. To me, that means you treat your bike like someone who owns a wal-mart ride. And even then...

It's like the Mexican guys I see here in Chicago late at night who get off work and they're all riding home at this really relaxed pace on their Magmas or Huffy's or whatever clunker. But they've got smiles on their faces and a plastic bag with their work clothes hanging off their handlebars but they're happy and while I think they might not think about their bikes in the way that I might, I could very well be dead wrong and that this moment -- them riding home -- is that small quiet transitional moment of the day. They're always so serene and that's awesome.

There are degrees and different meanings one associates the words ethusiast and collector and so on. Nerdery and geekery are obviously rampant here (we're on computers!) but also that desire to seek out knowledge and to keep seeing new things and keep on top of them by being here and riding different bikes.

While you might have more than one of the same kind of bike, I don't think it means that they're the same. As noted, each one rides a little differently, each one comes into your hands a little different. Each one satisfies some part of you.

I have three track bikes (Colnago [track only], Bob Jackson [daily rider/long distance tourer], 3Rensho [track and street duties]) and I'm good with all of them. They all seem to belong. I don't have a desire or lust to go after another -- that's how I know I'm done with picking up track bikes. I love my bikes and love riding them just as much -- it's that simple. The joy (and the pain, heh) they gave me is something that is priceless.

Now, on to that cyclocross bike... ;)

Could you explain this to my wife? ;)

This summer I start work on building a bicycle house in the back yard complete with workbench, stalls for each bike, a beer refrigerator and a tv so I can watch bike videos and the TDF in peace.

I just picked up number 6.5 yesterday.

In roughly chronological order:
-3 speed cruiser w/beach bars
-singlespeed cruiser w/ape hangers
-geared mountain/commuter w/rack and slicks
-Surly Steamroller coastie
-ultimate wheel (thats the .5, also the fixed-est)
-crap single speed folder
-20" bmx-er (because the folder was crap and I wanted something rideable with small wheels)

Why? Because I have teh sickness.

WithNail 04-21-06 08:06 AM

meh I've only got 3
-colnago track
-Vitali track
-S&M challenger BMX

Grimlock 04-21-06 08:11 AM

1. Steamroller. My showpiece. It is completely babied.
2. 70's french conversion. I painted it pink, lime green, blue, black and gold. Looks like crap but I can leave it downtown without worry.
3. 70's Supercycle single-speed. POS. Used it as a bar bike until the conversion was finished.
4. Giant MTB that I never ride anymore.
5. Last night, someone dropped off a CCM Cheetah at the co-op, so I bought it right away. I've always wanted a blingin' chopper. This resto will be fun.

visitordesign 04-21-06 08:22 AM

1. bianchi pista
2. kogswell fixed gear
3. custom bob jackson track
4. haro shredder bmx
5. dahon folder

mcatano 04-21-06 09:20 AM

My ladypal and I have five:
- 3Rensho track bike
- Frankenstein british track bike
- Oldey timey beach cruiser with coaster brake
- Her kid's road frame with 24" wheels and a 3-speed hub
- Her 'custom' made (by me) 650c wheeled fixed gear

Aside from the frame that I'm building for myself (standard issue lugged track frame), there are a couple of track frames that I'd like to get my hands on (a lugged Marinoni for the Cdn pride, eh; something Italian...), and if I found a 3rensho with round fork blades that fit me, I'd probably sell mine to buy it (the aero fork blades being the only thing about my bike that I'm not totally in love with). There's a good chance that I'll be buying one of those Volume 26" BMX bikes in the next couple of months, as they're cheap, look like total grin machines and would probably be a great winter bike. If I found a Kona Keiki (or could pry one from jim-bob's cold, dead hands) I'd grab it in a heartbeat. I have my dad's vintage Torpado road frame hanging in my pantry, waiting to be rebuilt with decent parts as a geared machine.

Having a bunch of bikes seems like a relatively innocuous pursuit. It's not like they're guns or something.

Re-Cycle 04-21-06 10:24 AM

oh nooo the debate of why you'd want more then one bike. If you can find one bicycle that fits all my needs I'll listen. Also I like not being able to use my spare bedroom cause its pilled up /w bikes *grumble grumble*

you should come down. there is a ton of great riding... you should at least bring a track bike for the track, and your mountain bike. if you were to only bring one... your mountain bike. there are some sweet, sweet trails down here, if you're not familiar. there is so much great riding right from my front door. i live a few blocks from the veledrome as well.

AfterThisNap 04-21-06 01:09 PM

three complete bikes, 4 frames, and that's after I sold/threw/gave away about 10 years worth collection of parts, bikes, and frames before moving to NYC.
