Bikes: ugly touring rig

another question, the grease in a sea foam green tube with the same logo... can one refer to that simply as "phil"? or is it "phil grease?" "Phil wood grease?"

Those would be "Chrome Dome" mounting washers. They're great, I had them swap em' out with the traditional mounting washers on my rear hub when I ordered my new wheels.

Do those "chrome dome" mounting washers fit on other hub axels? Say, Suzue Pro Max?

i doubt it. the phil ones fit on the bolt, not the axle.

nope, it threads IN to the axle (it's a bolt, not a nut).

wonder if those "chrome domes" keep the axles from 'walkin' in the drops as you tighten them?

yeah, and from what i hear the whole thing is based on faulty physics... the idea is that a larger contact area will reduce slippage and reduce wear on dropouts. truth be told, it spreads the area out more, but the net damage and slippage is the same, based on what people tell me about physics.

meantime, my jeans still smell like the phil grease. mrowl.

ok, i'm just drunk enough to argue that (whee!).

so, yes, i agree that net damage and slippage is the same (second law of thermodynamics iirc), but it's spread out over a larger area, so the slippage/damage per unit area is less.

in english: the damage is more spread out.

in environmentalist-talk: the footprint is larger but lighter

hmmmm. they look pretty nice. The LeVel hubs have a similar 'large' nut on them and when I was using them they seemed to 'stay' pretty good.
