take a ride up that cemetary (from macadam). when i lived up there, i used to see a guy barrelling up on his fixie. lots of curves and headstones. then you can cruise down (maybe with a front brake), head over the bridge and get a giant burrito at cha cha cha.

The graveyard is right across from the sellwood bridge on the west side. It's pretty enourmous.

Yeah, I gave up on the ice cream ride as well. The graveyard is closed after dark so if the security guard catches you just come up with something like "sorry sir, but tonight I had to stay late at work, and this is the safest way home for me." Alternatively you can just play dumb. Also, it's dark and there are no street lights and if you don't know the way, it might be a little tricky.

just head on macadam towards the sellwood bridge. it's just across the street, so you can't miss it. it's called riverview, i think. huge and pretty steep. also, super-dark at night. there are multiple paths once you get in it, but they all go up and end in pretty much the same place.

ahh, yes. sorry. it's a been a while. that springwater trail is pretty nice. also, it's a good idea to take the north side of the bridge both ways. no sidewalk and a single, narrow, lane on the east-bound side isn't always fun.
as far as security goes. . .just tell'em you're an LC student. they get away with EVERYTHING up there.

you've got to be crazy to do the cemetary ride on a fixie. That ****ing climb is no joke. I love it on my road bike, but 48x18 is just too tall for that ****er. Sellwood bridge is def. the best way to access it though, especially if you live on the east side. Do it in the afternoon on a sunny day.

i live in sellwood and often ride up the cemetary fixed wearing 46x16.. it's really not that bad.
as for neighborhoods in portland, i just bought my first house in the montevilla neighborhood in ne, and moving in this weekend. seems like a cool place to live, looking forward to it. i will miss being close to the west hills, but i'll have mt. tabor fairly close, and the long gradual climb up east from downtown.

i was at that show too and apparently there was a shootout between two guys and a bunch of cops. one of the guys got shot, and the other ran off right around the time the show was ending. there were about eight blocks cordoned off when i was leaving the show.

70th....7 miles. as pdx goes, a little far. here's the upside. when i lived in boise, i rode 7 miles to work and 7 miles back every day. maybe a little bit more.
but when you ride that 7 miles, you know how tired you'll be? tired enough that you'll sit and have 2 or 3 beers and be ready to go again. and sleep very well at night.
granted, if your commute is like that, i can see it being a pain in the ass. 7 miles isn't a herculean feat, but it can be a pain in the ass if you aren't in the right frame of mind and have to it every day, whether or not you feel like it.
then again, adusting to that is yet another example of how cycling can help you adjust to life.

you know, they always told me 10 blocks = 1 mile when i was growing up, but if you look at this google map, you'll see that the distance between 39th and 50th avenues is less than 1k.
also, depending on where i work on any given day, there are lots of good bike + transit options from there.
