Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

I still love atacs and have them on 4 bikes. Hated spds, don't believe in eggbeaters because I'm not light.

I *hate* riding in non-biking shoes, and can't believe anyone would choose to ride more than a block in bmx/skateboard/puma type sneakers, let alone converse (I don't think I've seen a single fixed rider in town wearing anything but Converse, which on top of being crappy shoes are the absolute worst shoes to ride a bicycle in). You lose so much power and control with squishy shoes. I just wore street shoes and platform pedals for years, and once I rode atacs I never considered putting clips and straps on a bike so I could wear street shoes.

Most shoes fit me really poorly - Shimano and Italian ones are too narrow, cheaper Chinese ones and all of the non-bike brands (adidas, nike etc) are either too long or too wide.

Specialized and Lake mountain shoes fit my wider than normal but not as wide as wide fitting shoes feet. I'm totally loving Lake mx100s and I'm glad I bought two pairs when they were on sale at Ben's cycle for fifteen bucks.

Eggbeaters for sure, but go a step above the chromo ones. The stainless tend to last a bit longer.

Also, I've been loving my Shimano SH-M038 shoes for a good year now. Super comfy, and walkable, with a bit of a flexy sole for all day wear. I ride them to work, and leave them on all day with no problems. Not bad for price either.
