$100 Deep V's!!!!

I'm sorry for that. I really am. But here's the story:

On my way to the DePaul library to study, after watching Prison Break, I'm locking up outside Burger King for some coffee (closest thing). This guy walks up to me, older guy, suntanned, and says

"Hey, man, you interested in some Deep V rims?"
Ears prick up.
"Maybe, you got some?"
He looks at my bike and goes,
"Yeah, they got the dual sprockets on 'em like yours do" Giggidy giggidy
"You know what kind?"
"Oh, I don't know, the ones made in Australia." Giggidy goo.

I size the guy up; he's missing some teeth, and it's clear he's been through some shiz, but he seems OK. And I can probably take him if I need to. So I walk with him to the Shurgard on Ashland and Fullerton. He tells me about how he just moved back to Chicago from Florida, how he's a carpenter but he had a bad injury a year ago, but how he's going to find work in Chicago. He tells me how bad the neighborhood was even three years ago, let alone in the sixties, when there were three biker (motorcycles, Orphans don't count) gangs in this hood. This is, by the way, on the border of just about the most posh neighborhood in Chicago.

So we get back to his storage unit, and I kill him. Kidding! He opens up the door, and next to this old Motobecane roadie out come these dope-ass mother****ing grey on black on black machined Deep Vs laced to IRO hubs. Fixed-fixed; grey (I think, maybe black) rims, black spokes, and black hubs. They spin like they're new, and they're totally true. Turns out he's got 4 bikes, and he had a friend who ran a shop in Florida who sold him these.

I'm cool. I'm like "Yeah, these are nice, but you know they're for a totally different kind of bike than the one you've got there, right?"
"Yeah, I know. I just got tired of working on bikes"
"So how much you want?"
"I don't know, man, make me an offer."
"Well, I got 50 bucks right here"
He makes a face
"But I can give you 50 more when I go to an ATM"
"Alright, man, it's a deal."

So we walk out to a Walgreens, and I give him $60, cuz I'm that kind of guy. We part ways, and he tells me he's glad I'm going to enjoy them. "You bet I am, man, I'm gonna ride on these every single day." I wish him good luck, I strap 'em to my back, and ride out of earshot before I yell out in sheer Jewish joy. (I'm a Jew).

So please, be happy for me.

Those are good wheels and I love that anodized grey -- I don't see them around anymore.

Great story.

spencer 05-08-06 09:06 PM

congratulations.i hate you.

hmai18 05-08-06 09:06 PM

That's a hell of a deal.

ka12na 05-08-06 09:07 PM

Dang you're lucky!! That's the next upgrade I want to make on my bike. The only thing holding me back is the $260 cost for them, not to mention shipping from IRO.. ehh:(

baxtefer 05-08-06 09:07 PM

ok. So who in Chicago has had their wheels stolen in the last 2 days?

B10Cycle 05-08-06 09:08 PM

Sweet story.
Even scha-weeter deal and wheels.

Ride 'em in good health.

joshr 05-08-06 09:08 PM

Reason #12 I want to live in a city: Random dudes approaching me with practical bike scores.

No_Minkah 05-08-06 09:19 PM

Dear God,

It's me. Please. Please, please, please, do not let these wheels turn out to be stolen.

Please.
Thank you.

fordfasterr 05-08-06 09:21 PM

you lucky israelite !

=)

space_robots 05-08-06 09:47 PM

He had four other bikes, hm, I wonder if they were also for sale? Something tells me 'yes'.

Tangsooyuk 05-08-06 09:52 PM

More than likely hot. A wino can pull an intricate story out of the sky and you dont think twice about (or question) it because you are so focused on the deal.

teadoggg 05-08-06 10:03 PM

stolen, for sure.

ChicagoDave 05-08-06 10:08 PM

that story screams stolen... enjoy em while they're hot!

hyperRevue 05-08-06 10:09 PM

I am shocked it took 5 posts for the idea of stolen wheels to even be presented..

No_Minkah 05-08-06 10:10 PM

So what would you do in my shoes?

gorn 05-08-06 10:15 PM

Take down the pictures so someone can't see them to describe them.

space_robots 05-08-06 10:17 PM

Well, if you hadn't bought them someone else would have. That's about all the condolence I can offer.

I might have bought them, depends on my mood really. It's likely I would have just told him flat out that I thought they were stolen and then left.

I mean, come on, the dude supposedly brought the stuff all the way from Florida, but doesn't even know much about it?

Anyway, don't be surprised you find your new wheels and/or bike u-locked with someone else's lock in the future, with an angry biker or hipster ready to jump you.

zip22 05-08-06 10:18 PM

i would take down the cog info as well.

worker4youth 05-08-06 10:20 PM

Hey, those are my wheels! Someone stole them off my fixie last week...

No kidding. Is this a Canadian board?

Rikardi151 05-08-06 10:20 PM

They dont HAVE to be stolen... I mean, he had em in a storage unit, most wino-ish thieves dont rent storage units to keep stolen wheels in (though I probably would if I was a thief). He also knew they were deep V's.(anyone who didnt know anything by looking at the label wouldve called them "velocity rims", as most people who look at mine do.) and he also know they wouldnt work on a road bike with deraillers. Maybe Im totally wrong, but I like to think the best about people if I dont know all the details.

Also, if you do find the person they really belong to(and maybe prove it with a receipt), it would be considerate for them to reimburse you some of the money, since you did pay 100 bucks for them, and giving you 75 to get their old wheels back is better than paying 260 for new ones.

Matthew A Brown 05-08-06 10:24 PM

Dude, people don't need to be either dumb or poor to steal stupid ****.

Sayin's, is all...

sloppy robot 05-08-06 10:25 PM

its not like the dude sold them for 25 bucks.. not that im saying they arent stolen.. but if they were.. i bet the dude would have jumped at 50 bucks
