lock ring for campy hub?

i think this may have been covered recently, but i couldn't find it.

last nite i was installing my new wheels with campy "sheriff star" hubs. my shimano cog threaded right on, but the shimano DA lockring wouldn't thread, and in fact seemed too small. the campy lockring threaded on just fine however, which is fine for now but i've heard they can strip easily, and in fact this one seems to be on it's way out.

so what lock ring alternatives to i have?

Nevermind.
I need to read more carefully.

I think your only option is Campy.
Maybe old Superbe.

schloe mo 05-12-06 09:11 AM

thanks hyper. good to see you at the sprints.

hyperRevue 05-12-06 09:12 AM

Nice to see you too.

Did I understand your post correctly that you have a campy lockring?
If not I have one I'd be willing to sell.

gorn 05-12-06 09:17 AM

I think Campy/Miche/Phil are all italian threaded.

schloe mo 05-12-06 09:22 AM

yup, mine's campy.

thanks gorn. i'll most likely pick up a Phil ring soon.

hyperRevue 05-12-06 09:23 AM

Ugh, yes.
I always forget Phil makes Campy compatible stuff.

luckycat 05-12-06 09:52 AM

Get a phil, much more durable than the campy, and probably less money.

absntr 05-12-06 09:58 AM

Phil all the way. The Campy one blows. I have one on the track wheelset and man, those two notches are almost rounded off. Not worth it. The Phil is so much beefier and has a good number of notches for excellent leverage. It's what I run on the Jackson.

luckycat 05-12-06 10:11 AM

And if you use the same crappy park lockring tool I have you can use the three pronged side with the phil lockring.

visitordesign 05-12-06 10:13 AM

i'm not a fan of phil lockrings. the notched area is too thin and it makes them a bit fragile if you change cogs frequently. i actually just bought EAI (campy compatible) lockrings to throw on my phils the next time i change cogs. they're far beefier. pauls are also campy compatible. trackstar just gave me the rundown on campy compatible lockrings last night. how fortuitous.

hyperRevue 05-12-06 10:15 AM

Park tools lockring tool sucks ass.
Buy a nice set of channel locks and file down the teeth to make a lockring pliers.
Best tool I own.

mrRed 05-12-06 10:17 AM

does the EAI locking fit the 3 notches on the park tools lockring tool as well? That's the thing I love about the Phil lockring. Those notches line right on up and I feel like I get much better contact on 'em than the other lockrings I have. Surly lockrings suck, IMO, but that's neither here nor there.

absntr 05-12-06 10:21 AM

Pauls are Campy Compatible? They're super beefy.

I haven't seen EAI lockrings yet -- but now I'm intrigued.

Also, +1 on the channel locks. That's what Marcus at Yojimbo's does. Super nice leverage and beefy.

Edit: I said cogs when I meant lockrings.

freddiesan 05-12-06 10:26 AM

I just bought the EAI campy lockring from Ben's cycle. It's beefy and threads on perfectly on my Campy Nuevo Record hub.

mrRed 05-12-06 10:27 AM

EAI cogs are really nice. I have a 19 (I know ... its huge) and its really nicely made.

visitordesign 05-12-06 10:30 AM

yeah. the EAI lockrings are as nice as their cogs, just about as beefy as the paul lockrings, but for a fraction of the price--around 10 bucks.

schloe mo 05-12-06 11:12 AM

thanks everyone. looks like i need to look at the EAI as well.
and I've got to make one of those channel lock tools. i currently use the
knuckle-busting Park tool.

trons 05-12-06 11:21 AM

park lockring tool works fine, STOP HATIN

Ceya 05-12-06 11:22 AM

look for a old Campy Super Record or Nuevo Record lock ring. They are steel and last a long time.

S/F,
CEYA!

absntr 05-12-06 12:03 PM

What do the EAI lockrings look like? How many notches? Anyone have a photo? (couldn't find any on the interwebs).

visitordesign 05-12-06 12:05 PM

update: i guess i misunderstood at trackstar last night. i just double checked with paul about their threading. it's JIS and not campy compatible.

Landgolier 05-12-06 12:19 PM

The Park lockring tool pretty much sucks, but if you get stuck with one it works far better if you use the middle tooth of the 3 prong side. Stamped POS.

Does anyone else use a Park BBT-7 bottom bracket tool for their Phil Wood lock ring? It is a perfect fit. I had mine for an older Dura Ace BB. With 5 prongs you don't slip at all.

I have not tried the pliers, a little pricey but I am guessing they are worth it.
