MAN UP!!! (pt. 2)

not tricks. tricks are lame. who are the cats that ride all day when it's 38 degrees and raining? or just damn cold? how about getting hit twice in 1 day (at 8:30 am and 4:30 pm) and keep going? or riding a week on a strained acl? who's delivered bloody packages (even when it's not your blood)?

this isn't really that serious, i just think it's funny that riding backwards in circles makes you "a man". ha. sack the **** up

first of all...stop stealing thread titles...man up...be original

second of all....riding all day when it's cold is one thing, but ....

getting hit twice in 1 day....you get ZERO props for that ****
riding a week on a strained acl....that's just STUPID
and if you if your job is delivering packages ,and you deliver them bloody, you need to STEP THAT GAME UP...no pride in that

and lastly...'manning up' is not doing something that makes you a man...that ish is like a false cognate...

is this guy for real? jason i'm right with you. non-messengers and even rookies don't get it. we're not even looking for props (messengers, that is...), only the tiniest bit of respect. riding on a strained ACL may be STUPID to you, but not being able to buy dinner sounds kind of CRAPPY to me.

p.s. i still do not understand the term 'man up.' i do not like american slang.

Aight, step up then, what's your regimen? And if the man has to ride on a busted leg to make ends what's the hate?

What's the deal with the 2 slams in one day though I wanna know?

On a work day I ride from 9:45-7(-7:45 depending on where the last job is to) and put in anywhere from 50-75 miles. On a non work/school day I put in around 10 miles. On a weekend day I'm on my bike a ton and try to hit the track from 10:30-2 with a 15 mile ride there and back plus whatever other riding I do that day which tends to be another 5-15mi. I ride all year round and I've only been hit by one car, his fault with witnesses that I've walked away from doing far more damage to the car than it did to me (that however doesn't include my frequent and occasionally disastrous encounters with inanimate objects such as bus sign posts or the ground).

Freezing rain is the worst. I've had to ride in that **** to make ends meet. Never been hit more than once in a day.

I have no problem saying messengers work their asses off in the worst conditions and deserve more than a little respect for that. Its easy for people (like myself) with office jobs to think on a nice spring day, "sh*t yeah I'd like to get paid to ride my bike around all day" but in the middle of a snow storm I have no problem taking the bus in and being inside doing my job. Yeah, I'm sure riding injured isn't the smartest thing to do, but like RedMenace said, you gotta make ends meet somehow.

Because a true ninja like teiaperigosa doesn't get hit. He sees the car coming and does a triple-backflip over the hood, lands perfectly and looks around like 'what? can't everyone do that?' Now THAT deserves props.

What? Just because you choose to subject yourself to crap weather and physical injuries? (altho most my injuries come after the workday...)
Personally I don't think we deserve any more respect than anybody else that chooses to do a job that they enjoy doing. And I don't think too many people get much respect for that in the first place.

IMO, Respect comes from your actions amongst your peers. And I feel I can't ask for any more than I already get. To every other John and Jane Doe you're just another person in the way. (sorry, I have a bad outlook on the general population)

^ Good call...

I think a lot of times people tend to lose track of the fact that being a messenger is a CHOICE that people make. Sure it's a cool job and sure it's a crazy job (weather, drivers, et al.) but I don't think that it necessarily deserves any more respect than any other job.

I choose to make ****ty money and have health insurance. I fix computers so little kids can use them at a crappy, underfunded public school. I don't however run around asking for people to respect me just because of the job I choose to do. That would be a tad bit ridiculous.

Don't get me wrong, this isn't an attack on messengers. I think you guys have really cool jobs and all of the portland messengers that I have met were really great people. Just don't ask me to bow down to you in the respect dept. for no other reason than you choose to ride your bike all day.

Why's this gotta be an only messenger (dis/)respect thread? What about people who tear ass every available minute who aren't messengers? In the words of teia, "Man up."

anyone who does anything because they want props for it is kinda silly in my book. do what you love, and you'll do it regardless of respect/props or not.

I bet I have a more tedious, demeaning job that pays less. I don't even have full cube walls*, and in the afternoon the glare off my monitor is pretty hardcore. That's how I roll. Can you handle it?

What? And fixing computers for underprivledged children isn't cool? Ass hole.

Did I mention that they are blind, terminally ill, mentally ********, and all afflicted with a bad case of the HIV's? Cool enough now?
