I like the way you guys respond to practical questions with a solution that'd make the situation even worse. True to the spirit of the forum

I too have a 27"er gaspipe conversion (Nishiki, in my case.). It's got pretty crappy cornering clearance, and I've had to adjust my riding style accordingly.

If you've got an old 27" conversion, I'd stick with 27" wheels. I'm afraid to put 700cs on mine. In fact I'm building up a new wheel set with new 27" inch rims...some are still making rims of that size, so there's no reason really to go with 700c. With 27X1 1/8 tires (or wider), the wheels are noticably taller than 700cX23. Plus, if you are tall and have a really tall frame, the taller wheels make the bike look better.

Of course it's going to make a big difference if you go from 27 x 1 1/8 to 700x23 - but if you stick with a similar sized tire, it's still only 4mm. My road conversion is a Nishiki built for 27" wheels, on which I'm running 700c x 28mm tires, and soon to go up to 32mm tires when these wear out. You gain a bit of clearance for fenders, and I've never had a pedal strike

BB height issues aside, personally, I kinda just like the idea of putting 27" rims on old frames...just seems more appropriate. Save your deep V 700C rims for your real track bike.

Any good geometricians out there..how many fewer degrees of lean will a 4mm lower BB translate into?

yeah... b4 i went fixed i used to corner mad tight, i used to have bmw shinburgers and they were huge and i still scraped them from time to time- i cried every time- now i have to be careful and ive had a few pedal scrapes but no striking yet- its scary- i have 170's a 700c rear and 27" front- i want narrower pedals and thatll help a bit but nothing helps cornering like a freewheel- sometimes i miss those days

Depends on how wide your pedals are and how much lean you get with the taller wheel/tire combo.
