I've been single speeding for a while now, and the allure of a fixed gear is calling me. I have two used prospects right now; a 2004 53cm Surly Steam Roller and a 2004 51cm Pista (chrome), both priced at $400. I am leaning towards the Surly right now (more "utility" options), and if the guy emails me back tonight, I will probably go for a drive and bring it home tomorrow. Of course, the other option is getting an IRO for a little more coin.

Is there an advantage to either the Surly or the Pista? I'm getting it for running around town, fun, and all around reliable transportation.

I would have to say go with the IRO Mark V. I had realized I made a somewhat poor decision on getting my Fuji Track for $500, because I'm going to order a Deluxe wheelset from IRO now, which puts it at about the same price as the Mark V with a Deluxe wheelset + shipping.. And still I've got to upgrade my crankset for it to be on par with a MV.

I would say, save for a MV because it'll be well worth the money !

I started on a 51cm pista maybe like 3 years ago, I'll vouch for that, a great first fixie

Thanks for the responses. What started out as a "what used bike is the best" thread, is just like all of the other "first fixed bike" threads...both bikes are out of the picture now.

I double checked the measurements on my 4 year old road bike...stand over height just shy of 30 inches, and I am really comfortable on it. The 53cm Surly standover height was tall for me (so I backed out of the sale), but the IRO Mark V 53cm is .7 inches shorter (30 inches) than the Surly 53cm, which will make everything nice and comfortable Plus, the top tube on the IRO is the same length as my roadie, so I feel pretty comfortable with my decision. I would jump on the Pista for a nice starter bike, but the owner went back to Texas for the summer

The Mark V is very clean and sturdy, but obviously lacks the utility features you mentioned. It was my first fixed and is working out really well for me, and is strong enough to take the punishment I put it through. Was just a really great value all-around.
