my girl rocks the undies under the lycra, but she only wears lycra because she was getting some issues with pain that needed to be addressed. So she wears we lycra for her ride to work, pop's it off and she's ready to go without having to stand in the middle of the office bathroom buck ass nekkid, only in her underoos. I still think its silly, but it keeps her working properly so I'm really not one to complain.

The only way underwear would ever be comfortable under spandex would be if you were not actually RIDING your bike for any appreciable length of time. Try wearing your underwear under your spandex and riding for more than 5 hours. Really, do it. Then tell me how it doesn't 'bunch up like mens underwear'. It has nothing to do with 'opinion'.

Oh yeah, on the current subject, of course nothing under there. Had to exlplain this to my friend once when he showed up with boxers visibly stuffed into his brand new lycra.

Anytime on a bike is a good time, underwear, no underwear. lycra, no lycra...job, commute, hobby. They all matter.

the funny thing:

my girlfriend wears the double style because it is what works for her. I ride lycra-cowboy. And we were both surprised at the fact that I didn't and she did.
One way is not better than the other - I was just interested in who does what. And maybe allaying any other questions or fears riders may have concerning this issue.
Whatever works.

I dont have any lycra or anything, but riding lately on long rides I just throw some compression shorts over my underpants and then some cargo shorts, and this seems to prevent any chafing or anything.

now now folks, dont get your undies in a bunch!

i don't work on my bike and i haven't toured yet (hopefully some day) so i rarely spend 5+ hours on a bike. with this in mind, i'm ok rolling to the track with my undies under my spandex (probably the only time i will wear spandex) or riding to school and work and fun without spandex. I think i can count the times i've worn spandex, but i'll give the commando a shot.

It's either one or the other, or neither. (Fully butter'd up in the chamois being the most comfortable of the three) Sixtufit Olympia Gesass Creme is tops, and Bag Balm is the magic medicine for saddle sores.

I sometimes wear spandex under my shorts. I don't have anything with a chamois though.

I wish I could find spandex without a chamois that isn't borderline see-through. I also haven't done touring, but poofy stuff between me and my Brooks gives me the jibblies.

I'm pretty sure I've seen roadies wearing underwear under their lycra, you can see the underwear outline through their lyrca.

But on the bibs vs shorts question, I vote bibs, especially for the winter.

edit: underware, HAH

for me, carhartts or bdu's w/o anything underneath (on a brooks, mind you) works great.

for shorter rides, of course.

They are lucky the other guys let them ride. The roadies i ride with would make you go home if you showed up with undies showing through the lycra and make fun of you too.
