Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Lookit dat!!!

Shaft drive, no separate right chainstay. wow. Unknown origin and vintage, for sale at an auction site. Probably a coastie, possibly not in working order (but then what can go wrong on a shaft?)

Bikes: Cocaine the white stallion, Custom Witcomb pista, (Being restored) 80's Pogliaghi Track, (destroyed) RAP Round Breeze NJS, Cannondale Jekyll 900, 84/5 Pinarello Montello (all italian)

That is beast. Ultimate in clean "chainline."

How do you change the tire on that thing without a pipe wrench and a cutting torch?

Anyway, I remember this rant about the problems with shaft drive. Quick read.

Bikes: Surly Long Haul Trucker set up for commuting and loaded touring, old Sekine road frame converted to fixed-gear, various beaters and weird bikes, waiting on the frame for my Surly Big Dummy build

Looks like a rod braker, judging by the shape of the rims. That's pretty neat' I've never seen a shaft drive that used the driveshaft in place of the right chainstay before. Any idea on the make/model/year?

It would seem that using the driveshaft as a structural memeber would put a lot of stress on the bearings. Pretty cool though.

BMW motorcycles do that too. the older ones had the shaft running inside the right swingarm. The new ones have a single sided swingarm with the shaft inside. The wheel bolts directly to the driveshaft with 5 bolts (if I recall) much like a car wheel.

As for bearing stress. no matter how the wheels are attached the wheel bearings have to take the entire loaded weight of the bicycle. I don't see how chainstay design can ad more than the loaded weight of the bicycle to the bearings.
