Please, it's not about gas money or being afraid, it's about the fear of someone running out in front of your car, and now having two possible injuries happening. It's about being annoyed that someone you don't know sitting on top of a metal thing that can gouge your paint job about six inches away in moving traffic. It's about that jerk - if he scratches your car - bailing because he can, and having no recourse.

Here's the thing. If you were to ask, I'd let you, because that's polite and responsible, and I'd feel safe assuming you're cool. When you other posters when they talk about respect, I don't think you're the type to ask, or to care.

i catch a nice skitch now and then, fixed and brakeless. small box trucks have those big handles that might as well be labeled skitching handles. perfect height and size.

i've had a few good runs up 1st and and down broadway, but only when traffic is light. i let go before things get out of control.

I was wearing my full "Jittery Joe's" kit at the time, so no. Funny thing, spandex. No "drop" but hella expansion.

I once did this, but I got sucked into the wheel well and crushed. What really sucks is, the car was doing 95.

+1 to whoever said take the bus. For real, fixed gear riding in urban areas requries constant environment awareness. If your skitching, you give a good portion of that awareness up to the vehicle and putting yourself in danger for no good reason. Stick to doing it on skateboards and freewheels.

Skitching on cars/buses just sounds like trouble all around. Leave it to the skateboarders and freewheelers.

Oh good, just what I need more pissed off motorist who seek revenge against any biker they see b/c of some whack **** somebody did b/c they thought it was cool. Yea, that's so not cool its stupid and puts other bikers at risk.

i watched a guy get yanked off a guys ride then catch a beat down, just the week before last. car parked outside of the bar, guy figured he'd sit on it have him a smoke, then all of a sudden he found out that some folks really don't like people touching their rides at all.

i do notice that the pictures, and the fools i see doing this all seem to target certain types of vehicles, you really shouldn't be able to man up unless you grab something like this-

I do it at red lights from time to time, just to get up to speed. It works out really well if I'm right next to a stopped pick-up truck, poking my way between stopped traffic, just as the light turns green. Easy pickings that takes a little load off my legs.

i have enjoyed the thread thus far. i think its funny that the thread is called man-up. has anyone ever tried riding their bike? sure skitching is fun and its useful when going uphill but to say man-up is just, for lack of a better word, silly. i understand the danger factor that goes along with skitching but for some reason i dont agree with "man-up". i dont mean to insult anyone but why not man-up and just ride. why not just say, "try this" or "skitching- bad or good?". peace.

If you don't think motorist carry around aggression from run ins with whack bikers you must not live in the dirty south, north, east or west. If you piss off a motorist you are putting the rest of us at risk for a bank job some late night. And by the way I don't smoke wacky weed because it makes you stupid.

What you are doing in preforming this action actually gives the driver the mentality, or advances it that cyclist are out to do what ever the **** they want, and that a car driver has no rights or recourse. When they are cornered in such a manner, it is inevitable that some will preform violent actions against cyclist. So you are propogating a myth that we are out to say screw it all and we will do what we want. This type of attitude has made NYC CM the goat shoot that it is.



So they have the right to be mad, but your desire to skitch overrides this right? What gives you the right to do what ever you want? And what right do you have to decide if the effect, perceived or actual, is valid?

jeez. what's the big deal? i skitch every day at some point. usually, no one seems to notice until i let go and pass them. i find it easier on a fixie than with a freewheel because the energy transfers through the legs better.

if i can use a car to my advantage, i do. i find it no more dangerous than not skitching.
