I can get a mini around front tire, frame, parking meter(width) or rear tire, frame, and parking meter. No room to spare.

Yeah, the NY chains were like that before they changed the design. Now you either have to cut it or put a big keyring in one link to lock it around your waist if you're skinny (I don't have that problem). I don't reccomend cutting, as you might not be able to get both wheels that way.

Sorry to hear about your bike theft! (Unfortunately, not the first I've heard about in Rochester. All the others, though, were cable locks.)

Which shop was it that gave you the bad info? You may want to at least let them know what happened, so they don't screw anyone else up (and so they know why they're not getting any more of your business).

From each shop where I've asked about locks (Full Moon Vista, and Park Ave Bike Shop on Monroe), the employee I talked to said he thought a thick cable-lock ought to be fine in the city. I suspect neither of these people locks their bike up in the city very often. A more experienced employee at Full Moon Vista said that if he had to lock his bike outside (rather than in the building where he worked), he'd use a full-out chain (one of the tough OnGuard or Kryptonite ones).

I just ordered a new Kryptonite Evolution Mini U-Lock. It was that or one of the OnGuard mini u-locks. But the Kryptonite included a one-year anti-theft protection for NY state, three years elsewhere, while the OnGuard included nothing for NY state, and I believe one year elsewhere. Apparently the NY state thing is not because of higher theft rates per se (at least that's not the official position), but because of some law that forces Kryptonite to offer their anti-theft protection as insurance, which has certain restrictions.

I figure both u-locks are probably equally good (the Bic problem has been solved, at least for now), but with the Kryptonite I'll get extra peace-of-mind for the first year, at least. It's a little more expensive (about US$60, retail, vs $30), but for the insurance, it's worth it to me.

O just lock my bike up with one of these...

It can be done, but not always. It works best on things with smaller diameter bars to lock to like wrought-iron fences and railings. I can do it around a standard _/\_ shaped sign post, but it's tight. If you had fatter wheels or a wider frame than normal, you probably would have difficulty locking to some signposts.

I'm getting a krypto NY chain soon before i move back to the city. i'll use it with my bulldog mini which i wouldn't recommend to anyone since my friend's key opens at least 3 locks that we know of that aren't his. i'd only ever use the bulldog for the front wheel to frame.

onguard mini bulldog through the rear wheel sheldon style, and a 10mm onguard cable through the front wheel. i'd say this makes my bike more secure than 99% of those in the boston area. people around here are dirt stupid about locking up their bikes.

Has anyone ever heard of a bike getting stolen while locked up with a U-Lock "Sheldon style"? I believe him when he says that it's incredibly difficult, but I also think that some thieves are just stupid and might go for it, not knowing how much work it will be. Even if they don't finish, your back wheel is f***ed.

I have a regular Krytonite Evolution U and put it through my back wheel and the frame, and then use a Kryptonite cable to the front wheel. Am I being stupid? I don't park on the street very often, and even less often in sketchy neighborhoods, but I still don't need that feeling in my stomach when I come out of a store and my bike isn't there.

I use a Krypto new york chain (not fahgeddaboudit, the 6lb one) and I have a 28" waste. I can (unmodified) squeeze the open shackle (barely) in between links in the middle of the chain to wear it around my waste. It's super comfy actually. This is the most current design. It works great! You can't really get both wheels very well but it is possible if locking to something smallish

That's precisely how I locked my stolen bicycle up. I also wove the cable through both wheels, the frame, and the basket before locking it. The locking style does not matter if the lock is defective; I had one of the 'ball point key' locks and was not informed about this by the bicycle store.

Towner's Bike shop is the culprit and I am never shopping there again.

Those things are popular in europe (same style as that photo above with the 4000 neon locks on the bike. They're like $25 here, I'd maybe trust my front wheel to one, but I'd rather have the kryptolok (their $35 U, the gray one). Even a cheap U you have to saw or pry, the gorgons fend off wire cutters but 12" bolt cutters go through like buttah. And no, I'm not a thief, but I volunteer at a co-op so I get to cut locks off of a lot of donated bikes.

Also, the company somebody suggested above selling the NY F. chain has the one with the first generation lock in their picture. Still way strong, but this price shouldn't be compared to prices for the new model.

ummm...ohhhh...so kryptonite makes the lock, huh? No wonder I coudn't find any info on it, needed to know the manufactor. Thanks, the kryptonite website doesn't sell the locks but do have some good links. So there are 2 versions of the fugetaboutit? Is the 2nd newer version much better? I see the earlier version sells for way (about $30) cheaper.

look on ebay. You can find some killer deals on Kryptonite locks there. Just make sure they are actually selling what they post pictures of. Check the model name/number listed in the auction against those on Kryptonite's website or other reputable online stores.
