injuries
so i hurt myself in a ridiculous manner tonight. i was walking down the stairs at a party, stepped wrong on the bottom stairs and twisted my ankle which made me bend my leg really quickly and when i did this i kneed the **** out of a metal door frame. my ankle is fine but my knee is killing and i can't put any force on it while pushing. i iced it for about 20min right after it happened. should i ice it again, or apply heat?

im actual serious, but i'd suggest the best of both worlds, get an icy hot patch, maybe a 24 hour drug store/pharmacy should have 'em. I used it it when i had a similar incident, and the patched actually worked suprisingly well.
But if you cant make it out, and looking totake care of it at home, a few pointers from my running days: If its you muscle right behind the knee, heat should work best for it relaxes the muscles, and ice usally is for swelling, probally best if the pain is the front part of your knee. Also, if you knee cap looks weird, theres actually a good chance it could be dislocated, ive seen it happen, but thats an extreme case, and you'll need more than ice or heat for that.

i have those patches, but i dont think this is the kinda injury it'd help with. it's my knee cap that hurts, so not a muscle. maybe i'll give it a go though

Here try this and tell me what happens, fully extend your leg and try to move your kneecap side-to-side, make sure to do this very gentilly. What does it feel like? If it causes extreme pain you may have a problem. If it feels like grinding then again you have a problem. If it feels normal then just take some advil or a different kind of pain reliever and put ice on it for 15 minutes every hour. Post again and tell me what you felt and I can further diagnose it. -Will

that means you just bashed your knee (i have done this numerous times). You will have pain for 1-2 weeks and big ass bruise should form in about 2-3 days. Ice when it is sore or if it hurts at night. If your knee is really stiff when waking up in the morning a little heat and stretching should get you going. I usually take 2-3 days off from the bike and then I am good to ride with slight pain.

yesterday at the race i was trying to get on a curb because of a construction zone.
my bike slid on the gravel (which i was thinking in the back of my head is what
was gonna happen) and i fell to the left. the problem was that i fell on the chain tied
around me waist and the lock itself was on the left. its sore as hell today i couldnt
even sleep on that side last night without waking up from the soreness.

Evan,
I would try stretching a bunch and then if you're up to it try going for a small ride. Maybe 3 miles at the most or just enough to get you warmed up then try stretching it out again. This should help you in a speedy recovery but make sure you stretch and have ice on it about 15 minutes after the ride. -Will
That made MY side hurt. Damn that must suck! I don't know what could help that maybe take some Advil or something similar. -Will

damnit, evan! i was hoping to do some prospect park laps with you on wednesday! get better soon!
hope it's not that bad... there's already all the post-knee-injury advice on here that i know of, but you might try TRAUMEEL, if you haven't yet. homeopathic ointment (mostly arnica, i think) which works like a charm, but don't drink (alcohol or caffiene) while using cuz it just renders all the magic useless...
