Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

It's over

Fixed Gear is officially no longer cool. Wall Street Journal had an article on Fixed Gear on the front of today's Weekend Edition. Now way too mainstream to be cool.

Haven't you heard? Mixte three speeds are the new fixed gear. With pink Phil's of course.

Speaking of wall street journal types, everytime when I ride to work on the bike path there is some dude on a segue.
Is it okay to clothes line him as I ride by?

If you ride (or walk with) a fixed gear to be cool, then you might be one of those mystical "hipster" creatures that gets talked about often here.

Dude, it won't be dead until Ashton Kutcher gets a fixie. He can single handedly drive any trend into the ground.

walking with a fixed gear means always taking steps of the same size, and never stopping immediately or making sharp turns without hopping up and down, and never EVER wearing roller skates.

Your bike shop is selling them?
I think that would be enough for me to write a shop off.
(Is that how you spell it? Segway? Not "sugue" as in "making a transition")

Yeah, but it gives you such a zen-like feeling of connection between you and the pavement, man. I'm thinking about walking my fixie barefoot too. Shoes are the ****ing worst.

Modeedant (by the way, it IS Segway, and the correct spelling of the word related to transition, is segue, not sugue) /pedant

Is there an advantage to wearing those shants vs. wearing shorts? I know the reason why you would not wear pants, but am not informed enough to know why one would not just wear shorts. And for the record, I ask in earnest.

ugly knees.

seriously though. shants are a bit warmer than shorts. they are for spring and fall. shorts are for summer.
my shants (the chrome ones) also have built in padding, awesome pockets, and are comfy as ****. plus they are tough as hell.

so yeah, i wear shants and rock a fanny pack.
