Fixed gear recumbent

I don't really want to do it, but I'm just curious if it has been done.

I wouldn't think it would be possible on a rear wheel drive recumbent as the chain is too long to maintain proper tension, but on a front wheel drive I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Anyone?

Shedon Brown mentioned FWD recumbants somewhere. Trackstanding on a recumbant would be really difficult, especially on a FWD recumbant. I imagine that skiding however would be easier and more effective.

Skidding a front wheel drive sounds pretty dangerous to me...

Re-Cycle 07-18-06 12:22 PM

why why why?

As far as skidding, since your weight is mainly over the rear wheel and you can't move your weight so...

why why why?

Track standing is a piece of cake on my recumbent ;) trike. Skidding was just about impossible unless you hit the brakes and turn sharply on gravel. On clean pavement it rolls over first.

I was just thinking that it would be easy to lock the pedals. And tires are cheaper to replace than braking surfaces.

Re-Cycle 07-18-06 12:33 PM

Standard brake pads are $1.99 a pair at my local hardware store

SamHouston 07-18-06 12:33 PM

Yeah that pic didn't sport the handbrake that worked so well for 360 skids!

I'd think that the fully weighted rear wheel would be hard to skid, until you consider the seatback & on some models, hands-at-the sides steering (bent people what's the term for that?) Using these two things together it seems like it'd be a snap to skid a rear wheel fixed recumbent (if you overcame the chain length thing) Pull your ass into the seat & your back into the seat back while pushing with yon legs, weighted stop would be good. Ever worked out on one o' them universal leg presses? The only way I'LL ever lift 500lbs!

And tires run $20+ for ones that aren't total crap, and they will be burned through a lot faster than a rim. Are you using sandpaper brake pads, or bubblegum rims to burn through them that fast?

jimmat 07-18-06 01:52 PM

Yeah I once mentioned that I wanted to be the first person to race a fixed recumbant and my friend told me...yeah and I will be the first person to kick your ass!

Cynikal 07-18-06 02:19 PM

Recumbants are 60+ pounds, they should be hard on both brakes and rims.

The one I stopped today to talk was 21 pounds. And the only thing faster than me on my commute.

These recumbents are sweeeet. I took one for a test ride a couple weeks ago and it's so much fun.

that chainline would make me really uncomfortable.

GirlAnachronism 07-18-06 06:37 PM

it just looks like a really fancy wheelchair to me...

carkmouch 01-15-09 11:09 PM

Looks like someone finally did it...

Why? It has a series of tensioners. You've never seen a recumbent before -- they all have saggy chains.

tall&lanky 01-15-09 11:53 PM

^^^ I think he means that it would be going directly between your legs.

geeknerd99 01-15-09 11:58 PM

Rolling a recumbent trike is NOT fun. And it's surprisingly easy to do.

Very cool, and it looks like there is enough crank clearance to avoid heel strike.

What shop was that? I've been wanting to try one for ages.

joaos 01-16-09 03:18 PM

The unfaired recumbent hour record record was setted in a fixed gear:
