Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Pretty much the next evolutionary step for everybody that rides fixed. Beater--->cheapo cro-mo---->absurdly expensive custom/classic frame + NOS isht.

I'm thinking of pissing off the entire ss/fg crowd by getting a Rivendell Quickbeam and riding it while carrying a messenger bag and wearing spandex shants. Completing the ensemble with Natty Fab spoke cards.

Well, dang. I'll have to try harder. Red flag on pole? Brass bell on the handlebars? Studded, black leather saddle bags? Rear view mirrors?

I got it! Turn a $4K Colnago road frame into a 40T-21 fixie with Zipp 404 Tubulars. Show up at all the alley cat races and come in last place but talk the talk like I've been messing for 10 years. Good way to make friends, eh?

why bother?

The IRO isn't exactly an upgraded frame. It's just a cheap cromoly bike like you already have. Enjoy what you have. If you want to upgrade get a Walker frame made from Columbus Zona or a waterford true temper. That will take time and money to save but be worth. Don't even bother locking it just ride it and bring it home everytime, don't park it, fear it getting stolen and enjoy the beater you already have for its utility it provides.

Why not get a cheap new frame and some *****in' components? IRO or Pake with awesome drivetrain or wheels and average everything else, then when you're rolling in it, go 3rensho or gunnar or custom.

You don't have to go absurd right out of the box.

my price limit is about $650
Doh, just saw this. Well then, how about IRO Mark V, Redline 9-2-5, Raleigh Rush Hour, Pake, Bianchi San Jose (hah!), etc. blah blah.

well, being from Alabama I bet you know alot about the rough messenger life dont you? By the way i messenge here in NYC and use a 21 speed Cannondale road bike set up with spanking new Shimano brakes that'll stop my ****ing bike on a dime.

Well, even $650 is a pretty decent chunk of change for me, and I think most riders on here would agree. Similarly, I wouldn't want to leave a $650 track bike hanging around very long in the open. I'm sure a theif looking for meth money wouldn't spend much time searching for a Columbus decal before popping your lock.
