heads up to those of your riding these. i thought it was a worn out cleat that made my foot fly out so inopportunely. got home to discover the back tension bar on my right time atac carbon pedal was totally SPLIT IN HALF. id post a picture but im lazy and you can imagine what it looks like. of course they are out of warranty and i doubt time will do anything to help a poor man out. so what should i go for, crank bros candies? do people still like those? i have some old aliums but im nervous after what just happened to me. this is the worst possible timing. im moving to europe in a friggin month!

if you broke a Time pedal you should stick with Times, put it on a handle and it'll smack an eggbeater around. Is this on the new Atacs with the shaped tension bar or did you break an old pair? I've had a rear tension bar break at the spring on a 3 year old pair of Aliums.

They do break after a lot of heavy use, but the Eggbeater would have broken first. I'm a devout fan of the older style yellow composite ones over the new Aliums.

Wow. I have a 9 year old pair of carbon atacs that I use pretty much every day. The tension bars are worn a little flat but I never thought they'd break.
I also have a newer set of the composit body ones with the shaped bars. Only been riding them for about a month offroad. Everything seems ok.

i just took a look at my xs carbons - i've only had them for a couple months. the bars show no signs of wear - which is a good thing, because i love them.

isn't the retaining bar the only part that can't be replaced?

I had a little side to side play develop in the axle on one set of the newer ATAC XS models.
turns out the round 'dust cover' on the end of the pedal w the small holes in it is actually
a functioning adjustor. Tightening it down with a pinch pliers took up the slack on the axle.
should have taken some pics while I had it open. All good now.

in other words, you can adjust the bearings of the pedals?

I just got my atacs about a month ago. I'm not sure which are which as these are my first clipless (not carbon though), but they have the adjustable tension. When I first rode them I pulled out and hit my knee on the bars while sprinting/climbing. Hurt like a *****, and prompted me to switch them to the higher tension setting.

SO the message: people think these pedals will last for how long of heavy commuting and occasional race/excercize use on a fix?

on the newer models with that dust cover I beileve the answer would be yes... in a way.
I the older ones don't have the dust cover. Not sure about the 'alum' model.

I've got 4 sets and they have been working great for me.

my friend did that once after years of mountainbiking but man you musta really ridden that bike to wear one out using it on the street!

About the broken tension bar: You didn't smack it on something that you were riding over, didja?

no pedal strikes. never. ive had em for a few years now. theyre the old style composite (yellow, flat bars). is it worth trying to get it fixed? is it safe to ride on the flip side (thats what ive been doing)?

I had the both the old yellow and green Atac's and found em to be much more durable and have much better retention than the newer XS series. I have the new XS carbon's and I love em on my MTB but hate em on my fixie....too many unwanted releases even with the tension cranked up. My old ones I used to do skid comps on em....my new ones I wouldn't trust. If you have old ones...and can get em repaired.. I would say go for it. They are the bomb.

Is there anyone who makes knockoff cleats for the ATACs? I've already worn out a new set (at 29.99 a pop) because the shoes I wear don't protect the cleat much.

4 pairs, oldest is three years old and bought used, no complaints, except that the spring covers always break off. If I finally broke or wore out a pair, I'd call it fair game.

buy them from rei, $20 in-store pickup. when they wear out, just complain how they wore out too soon exchange them. gotta love rei lifetime no questions warranty.

heres an update on the atac situation:
to get a replacement tension bar will cost $5! im waiting for it to come in to the lbs. dunno how hard itll be to replace, but they guaranteed me if i couldnt figure it out they could do it for sure. nice! i thought my pedal was dead.

(for the alium model) the plastic dust cap also acts as an adjustable bushing that pushes on the bearing. the singular cartridge bearing in the atac pedals is located further inside the pedal and usually doesn't need much adjustment.

Combination skidding/skipping to a stop today on 5th ave near 43rd, my right foot popped out. I flew a ways, took the left pedal with me, and landed on my elbow and my thigh. Nothing serious/permanent, but things could have been different quite easily.

My right pedal has noticably more float, and has a weaker engagement. My cleat is not noticably worn. I took it to trackstar just to get a second opinion. They could see nothing wrong.

I'm going to look into the warranty, because this is bull****.

fwiw, if you switch the cletas from LR to RL it reduces the float..
