I have heard that term used to describe Match Sprint racing tactics before

I dunno, I saw 2 guys track standing for like 8 minutes and then one dropped off really fast and they did like 2 laps, the stands were PACKE like freaking nascar. And in another one the lead guy obviously wanted the guy in th eback to go to the bottom of the track for some reason and he kept faking the other guy down, Ill post the vids.

"Match Sprint

The sprint is a game of cat-and-mouse as the cyclists ride three laps around the track with the last 200-metre lap being a timed one. After an initial seeding round, the competitors are paired in a series of knockout races where losers are left behind and winners advance. Finally just the two fastest riders are left to compete against each other in a best two out of three match to determine the fastest sprinter. Always a spectator favourite with speeds often bettering 70 kilometres per hour, the match sprint requires raw speed, lightening fast reflexes, and superb tactics. Our own Lori-Ann Muenzer won Canada's first-ever Olympic gold medal in track cycling in Athens in 2004."

From here.

This is my amateur take on this:

Pretty much for this type of racing you want to be behind, you force your opponent out front and stick to their wheel and force 'em to set the pace. The trackstanding and fakery are just extreme examples of forcing your opponent out front.

Also forcing you oppontent inside means you're up track of them and you can use the banking to really launch you on your attack.

If they're out front, you have the advantage that you can see what yer opponent is up to, but he can't see you. That way you have the surprise for attacking. The drawback is that you'll have to go around the outside.

That trackstanding video is nuts. I'd have given up and just got on with it

Sort of but there are also advantages to having your opponent up track from you. If he is uptrack and a little behind you can pinch him against the boards making it impossible for him to attack without first slowing and slipping behind you.

The number and length of trackstands is now limited to prevent stuff like that.
