chain lock sleeve
 

Hey all,
Been lurking on this forum for a while. Great source of info, I want to thank everybody on here for all the informative posts.
Anyways, I was wondering what options there and what people use for chain link lock sleeves like the ones that come on all Krypto chain link locks. Since none of the Krypto chain link locks fit around my waist well, I figured I'd just go to the hardware store and buy the right length of chain link and a lock but I wanted to get something to protect my frame from getting beat up by the links over time. What does everybody here use?

the problem with hardware store chains is that they can be cut with bolt cutters. krypto's are hardened, squared off links which are a lot harder to cut. that being said, any lock is just buying you time. if someone really wants to steal your bike they will.

as far as sleeves, a lot of people make their own. any tough fabric should do the trick, or if you're super lazy you could just cut the sleeve off a long sleeve sweat shirt. these guys make a production version with some reflective material, but i've heard complaints about durability...

I've seen an old tube pulled over such a chain.

I use inner tube.

Hardware store chains aren't that bad. Just get the highest strength you can find and then try cutting it with some bolt cutters that should be nearby for chain cutting. I tried this at Lowe's, cut one chain in 2 minutes and moved up to the next size larger chain. This was 5800 lb test or so, and it took 8 minutes per side with hydraulic bolt cutters. That being said, yeah a lock buy you time, in this case 16 minutes vs. 2.
For a sleeve I got some fabric for 28 cents and used a sewing machine for the rest. Very sturdy and heavy too.
