Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Matt:

A better term for a FRED is "goofy ****er". Generally relates to newbies on bikes. They can be spotted wearing t-shirts instead of jerseys, maybe regular shorts, tennis shoes. The helmet is seated on the back of their heads, maybe even on backwards. The bike is generally older, bought used, more of a "frank'n-bike" or comfort/sport bikes. They have not yet been assimulated into the biking culture. I wouldn't say we all should aspire to be Freds but I rather be Fred than OCP!!!

How's this:

Fred ~ Hipster/Posenger
OCP ~ Metrosexual

Who cares, the guy wants to wear a TT helmet and ride 6 mph, that's alright by me. At least he's riding.

Oh if a Fred is a "goofy ****er" then I surely qualify. I've never worn a proper jersey mainly because I have an allergic reaction to paying $60 and up for a shirt, especially not one covered in advertisements, but I've put more miles on 2 wheels than many people who won't get on a bike without "full kit"

Not that the Road forum is any different than the SS/FG forum in this respect, but judging people by what they wear is so 6th grade.

Roadies suck sometimes. Some people don't have a closet full of sweat-wicking cycling jerseys to wear, so- holy jeezus- they wear T-shirts. Also, there are some people who ride bikes times other than 50 mile training rides: you know, like, to work? Cycling kit is not always appropriate. Don't think that a guy riding in shorts and a T-shirt is some kind of amateur- he may ride twice as much as you and been doing it for twice as long.

What I want to know is where sweat-wicking cycling jerseys wick the sweat to. Cause good lordy jeebus they sure are stinky after one ride... If they wicked to another dimension, I'd be all over that... There's nothing worse than putting on a soggy jersey for the ride home... Well there is, but that's not for this forum.

I'm a big fan of those jerseys with advertisments on them. Christ, shouldn't they be paying me to wear it. I got myself a sythetic shirt at Kohls for $12.

Absolutely nothing wrong with wearing t-shirts and absolutely nothing wrong with wearing your street clothes during your daily commute. Just trust me, when you see a Fred you'll know. But like I said, rather be that than OCP. A Fred can be strong rider (he just looks goofy doing it). In fact, in my Club, there is one gentleman who most would call Fred who averages 15,000 miles a year on his bike. He rides everywhere, never drives and his bike is old, cheap and he wears a t-shirt and regular shorts. I once saw him in a regular bike jersey and was amazed. He said his wife bought it for him she he felt compelled to wear it.

As to OCP... nothing sadder than some dork buying a very expensive bike, with expensive components, wearing very expensive clothing, everything matching of course, and I can outride him. Sad, truly sad.

so that's what a fred is....

i always thought it was so prima-donna of roadies to knock some n00b on an expensive bike. whatever, they might be a "buy it once" kind of person and wanted to grow into the bike. i guess it's their business if they want to look like a ****er too...
i wear a jersey every day on my commute to work, on my pista. if it's hot sometimes i'll wear spandex (ultrasensors FTMFW). i tried the t-shirt thing for a while, that didn't work. i'll take being slightly damp in a jersey over dripping sweat from a cotton t-shirt

That's not so sad as long as the rider's got commitment and will keep riding. I think it's sadder if that same person rides for a couple months, then stops riding completely and lets that very expensive bike sit unused in the garage gathering dust for the next few years.

Synthetic shirts from kohls(or target in my case0 don't have pockets or zippers and so suck for longer rides.

I'm not sure where all this anti-advertising jersey sentiment comes from the majority of people I see with logos plastered all over their jerseys are advertising for their clubs sponsors... Nothing wrong with that. There are plenty of plain jerseys available and yes they cost more then a C9 shirt but are worth it to be able to carry some food accesibly for mile 40 or to unzip in the middle of a 3000' climb.

I did see some guy in a disco jersey and jeans last week though. That was kinda wierd.

Have a very good friend that recently picked up a Colnago C50 with Campy Record for $2500. The owner bought it cause it was the best the shop had, rode it twice and it sat in his garage gathering cobwebs. He just wanted to clean out his garage and my friend made an offer and was surprised when it was accepted.

I agree, never make fun of anyone on a bike as long as they are out riding...

is there such a thing as magnetic pedals and shoes? so that u dont need clips or straps, they just stick together and dirt and mud shouldn't be a prob cause no mechanics involved. if not woudn't that be a great invention.
