Battle of the straps!

So I'm looking to upgrade to double straps and have a few options...

It's really only two, between the toshi and the mks doubles... the soma's I'm just throwing in there for the wildcard.

Who's ridden them and what are the differences, aside from price?

Are there difference in feel between them?

Not trying to be a smart as$, but why do you need double straps, other than for aesthetic reasons? I read somewhere that an ordinary Joe comes nowhere near being able to exert enough force on a pedal to require double straps

It's not a question of whether or not you're going to risk breaking you strap that requires doubles. It's more a matter of comfort and security using doubles.

I refused to use double-straps for so long...but finally gave in and now I kick myself in the ass for not using them earlier. ****in things make a world of difference, control like crazy. Toshi for life...double for life. Try goin down the steepest hill in CA with singles, just not that fun.

edit: only down-side...them ****s is ugly

Having a backup strap attached, particularly brakeless, seems a good idea.

What really needs to happen is someone on this forum who is crafty and good with a sewing machine (art students I am looking in your direction) needs to start mass producing a double strap holder. Basically you slide two single straps through it and viola you would have double straps. You could change out each individual strap as it wore out or got trashed. I have seen other homemade ones like this, but nothing too impressive.

from my experience, toshi and mks are similar in quality. but,
if you look closely you'll see the mks buckles are attached to
one layer of leather and one layer of nylon leaving the second
layer of leather to "protect" the area between shoe and buckle.
the toshi buckles however are attached to all three layers and
the all three layers are between shoe and buckle.
that's why i like the toshi better, but i'm not sure if it makes
any difference, just personal preference.

ramblin worker made them, they're at freewheel hayes I think.

personally I rock the MKS, mostly because I didnt want logos all over my toe straps. doubles are the way to go, way more comfortable.

I am also working on a doubler project. Email me at david(at)davidrmunson(d0t)com if you want to be kept up to date or would be interested in testing a prototype once I get my hands on some more materials.

is that your bike? i'd like to try the diy double setup, but i feel like it would be less than optimal with my GR-9s.

It seems like most prefer the Toshi straps... they are only ten bucks more than the MKS so it's not a huge difference.

Hell, I work at a leather distributor part time. If you can get me a better pic than the one shown (where I can see the entire double strap holder) I should be able to knock one out by the beginning of next week. Sounds like a decent challenge ...
