Nice ride. Enjoy the Kool-Aid!
Remember to keep the laces tucked on the Shell-toe's. Likewise your pant cuffs.
Allow me to recommend Soma toe clips.
I'm 46, and prone to babbling.

Nice bike. Congrats. I went fixed last spring after many years of pretty serious road riding and mountain biking at the ripe age of 43 and wish I started earlier. I love it. If you held a gun to my head and made me choose only one bike, the fixie wins, though I still ride the others.
To the question about the non-machined rims, yes, sorry, the black paint will quickly wear down and start to look as if they are machined rims. Not ideal, but it still works.

And 40? Not old. At least it won't be when I get there in five years.
