bling wheelsets

consider the following hypothetical situation:

you win a contest at an online bike retailer, and get to choose a clincher wheelset that's in the $450 dollar range. the wheels will be used mostly on the street, and occasionally on the track. the shopkeep tells you the following:

"Here's what I have:

Cane Creek Volos - a little unconventional. cane creek tells us that they use straight pull spokes, and extra light nipples at the hub. shifting the weight inwards supposedly makes these really quick. the spokes are 300% tighter than conventional spokes, making these stiff

Phil Wood Track laced to your choice of Mavic Open Pro, Velocity Aerohead, or DT Swiss R.R. 1.1 rims. Gorgeous and built to last. the name speaks for itself

Shimano Dura Ace 7710 laced to your choice of Mavic Open Pro, Velocity Aerohead, or DT Swiss R.R. 1.1 rims. - Unbeleivably smooth cup and cone hubs, and easy on the eyes to boot.

If you're not interested in those I be able to hook you up with something else in stock, I might have some steinwerks or pauls laying around. i've got some assorted rims as well. Let me know and I'll see if I can pull some strings."

so, which ones would you choose?

humancongereel 08-17-06 12:53 AM

volos sound pretty sweet...

but you also know the phil/dt swiss combo would be good. or open pro, but seeing as they're both good, and the dt swiss are lighter...

humancongereel 08-17-06 12:54 AM

oh, and by the way....i hate you. ;)

marqueemoon 08-17-06 12:55 AM

For mostly street use my choice would be Phil/Open Pro.

sers 08-17-06 12:58 AM

yeah i was playing around with thebikebiz's custom wheel builder, and it got me to thinking

humancongereel 08-17-06 01:01 AM

oh. i was thinking "hypothetical situation" meant "not hypothetical at all". you know, one of those deals.

schnee 08-17-06 01:03 AM

Phil / Fusion

Ill Mitch 08-17-06 01:32 AM

Campy Pista wheelset

Learn_not2burn 08-17-06 06:32 AM

Test out the steinwerks for us.

mcatano 08-17-06 06:38 AM

Those Steinwerks really do look nice. Has anyone seen them in person?

My Bad! I was thinking Mack hubs...

Jesse M 08-17-06 07:09 AM

i'd go for the phils, since they'll mainly get pounded on the street. dura ace would be my second choice.

aren't the volos tubular? that might be something to keep in mind.

TNCLR 08-17-06 08:18 AM

Campy C-Record laced to Mavic CXP-12's.

shants 08-17-06 08:37 AM

i just got a set of phils laced to open pros. they are the jam.

They also come in a clincher for $25 more on Cane Creek's website.

Learn_not2burn 08-17-06 09:28 AM

is the chainline standard on the volos or is it like pauls and mavic ellipses (44)?

WithNail 08-17-06 10:02 AM

campy c-records laced to any non annodized aluminum rim that you can polish until it looks like mirror.... or my wheelset.

barba 08-17-06 10:22 AM

One more vote for Phils laced to Open Pros (32 rear. 28 radial front). Stay away from boutique spokes.

Aeroplane 08-17-06 10:34 AM

Phils + Aeroheads. Bomb-survival, easy servicing, super custy-serve, and RESALE value.

thurstonboise 08-17-06 11:42 AM

Phils to Open Pros for the street. Those Volos wheels look badass, but truing looks like it would be a pain. No radial front for me.

eddiebrannan 08-17-06 11:44 AM

dura-open pro is what i have on my bike. 32 3x front and rear. true since day 1. love em to bits
