choppin' bars off before the drops

I'm considering finding a cheapo used set of wide road drops and chopping them down to a mini flat bar. Who here's done it? Did you like it?

I wouldn't bother, the flat area will be very narrow. I cut down some mountain bike bars once, and my shoulders were killing me after one ride.

just go and find a flat bar instead of going and finding a road bar to chop

Bikes: Full Fendered Bareknuckle, Faggin with 10spd Centaur, 1973 Raleigh 3spd Cruiser.

I saw a dude's bike today who had flat bars chopped with just enough room for some ourys and some sort of clip on road drop (or maybe he welded it himself) about an inch from the stem... kinda hard to explain, but flippin slick. I think it was built up as a 5speed. regardless, still pretty rad.

I've seen this guy before. Does he still have spinergys?

i cut a pair of randonneur bars, just wide enough to fit some cheap mtb grips next to the stem, and loved them, until i had to climb a fairly long, pretty steep hill. getting leverage to climb on really narrow bars was a b i t c h, and on longer rides a few more hand placement options is nice, but i keep them mounted to a stem that i drop in every now and again. they are crazy fun, but far from practical for daily use in even moderately hilly areas. oh yeah, the slight flare on the bars made them much more comfy imo. a flat bar - cut that short - has put my wrists is a position that make my hands semi-numb after a longer ride, and caused me to tuck my elbows into my torso causing my breathing and spinning to suffer.

I rode a guy's road bike who had mtb bar ends on a short flat bar set up as a bootleg bullhorn. once wrapped it looked pretty damn good. it was a little narrow for my tastes, but it was a cool setup.

Ha. I'd love to find some 26.0 riser bars so I can run my Salsa stem again. Shimming + skidding seems like a bad idea.

Bikes: 2 roadies, 7 fixed-gears, 1 hardtail, 1 full suspension mtb, and 1 hybrid...so far.

I chopped the bar and converted this Lotus Elan touring bike.
