i went down, fairly hard

so i'm headed to work lastnight, riding across the williamsburg bridge no problem, when all a sudden a pedestrian steps to thier left directly into my path, i hit the railing to avoid hitting them, i don't really remember much after that, then i was in my friends back yard getting cleaned up by my former med student boss

end results is my fork and front wheel are kinda destroyed, my left eye is still mostly swollen shut, i'm missing large chunks of skin on my arms, my shoulders are all swollen, my tounge is swollen(i guess i bit it going down) and my knees are so swollen i can barely walk. i'm just really sharing for sympathy, also i can't really leave my apartment. additionally there was a guy, i don't remember what he looked like outside of having a pretty nice beard and his bike was grey, he helped my carry my broken bike to my friends place and offered to call an ambulance, so thank you to that guy

but nothing broken, i should have gotten stitches in a few spots, we used butterfly bandages and the bleeding eventually stopped,,,,, some days you eat the bar, someday the bar eats you

ryand 09-11-06 08:18 AM

get better soyboy. sorry about the fork/wheel.

Air 09-11-06 08:20 AM

Ouch. I really wish they'd put up a slightly raised barrier between the pedestrian and bike areas on all the bridges. Any word when they'll reopen that southbound lane?

Glad you're OK though man that sounds rough!

soyboy 09-11-06 08:23 AM

i've always thought they should open the southside and make one for bikes, one for pedestrians, but that's just my opinion

stephenhatesyou 09-11-06 08:30 AM

****, that sucks... good luck with the bike issues, and feel better!

people really need to pay more attention to what's going on around them.

jyossarian 09-11-06 08:31 AM

Ouch dude!, sorry to hear that. Heal up and next time just hit the ped and share the pain.

soyboy 09-11-06 08:36 AM

yeah, stupid ability to want to protect others, from what i can tell the ped didn't stop, probably either didn't realize they were at fault or thought they should jet to avoid possible reprocutions(SP?)

redden 09-11-06 08:39 AM

Sorry to hear about your accident. Hope u recover quickly. I had an accident recently caused by a saftey device.

Air 09-11-06 08:40 AM

By the way - everytime I read the title I get a much different impression!

yeah man, you are watching out for them, they can share the courtesy of watching where they are going....if it's the difference in a nasty crash and just bumping a ped i'll hit 'em.

i wish you a speedy recovery.

to help your skin heal, get an aloe plant and tape the open skin of it directly onto you, and leave it overnight. I have road rash on my chin right now, and was using neosporin for a while, then switched to vitamin e, which was a lot better, but last night, put the aloe plant on it and it is so much better this morning.

soyboy 09-11-06 09:16 AM

i will, try that, thanks, anyone know where to buy aloe plants on the southside of the burg?

iridetitus 09-11-06 09:17 AM

repercussions.

glad no concussions.

keep yer head up man. you did the right thing even if the ped didn't. best of luck with the healing of you and bike.

thurstonboise 09-11-06 10:38 AM

Sucks dude. If you have some nasty bruises pick up some Arnica Montana. I went down about a week ago and have a nasty deep bruise about 6" across above my hip that took a day to appear. This stuff has really accelerated the healing process. It's gone from a gnarly black/blue to yellow and reddish in 3-4 days. I like the gel, the little pills made me feel a bit off.

killsurfcity 09-11-06 10:49 AM

i almost had a similar incident today. riding along behind and to the right of a ped and they just lunged to the right, right in front of me. i swerved hard and made it around them, but i made a mental note to be more cautious. peds are unpredictable.

get well soon soyboy.

^^edit... sarcasm implied^^ I hope you heal up well. isht for luck man... anybody would be in the same state in your spot.

kathrot 09-11-06 11:34 AM

so after an unfortunate incident with a ped, i got a little bell on my bike. i know it's not sleek or whatev, but it works well to lightly ding it so they know i'm about to pass. it also works as a courtesy ding to let other bikers know i'm about to pass - especially those folks who swerve when they ride.

or you could do like "Skeletor" (master of the universe, lmao) in the documentary "pedal"...."HEP HEP!!!, on your left, HEP HEP!! nobody as fast as me"....man his legs were nuts.

Shiznaz 09-11-06 12:20 PM

yeah if its between hitting a ped and hitting a hard object I'll hit the ped and share the pain. By all means make every possible action to avoid them but don't kill yourself just to save them from their stupidity. When I ride near people I always have my thumb on my bell and the peds on my mind but sometimes its not enough and people float around in a little dream world. If they invite themselves to get yanked out of it by a moving bike thats their prerogative. Theyre usually just a little scraped and embarassed, nothing that won't heal...

yeah...i have trouble raising my voice to a level that gives them enough advance warning (i.e. from 15-20 feet back)

killsurfcity 09-11-06 03:49 PM

you'd be surprised how many people don't know which side that is.

ryand 09-11-06 03:52 PM

...and/or how many people would then look over the left shoulder and say "huh?"

acavengo 09-11-06 03:57 PM

And even if they do which side it is, in a panic they may go the other way. Not that a bell, horn or whistle would do you much better.
