Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Sydney

Hi,

I will be coming to Sydney for about six months. I can bring either a track bike, or a scorcher type fixie with semi-knobby tires. Sydneysiders, which one would be more appropriate for the terrain?

why oh why do people always seem to go to Sydney?

a big city with no smiles....

Melbourne is the place to be and it has loads of live music, super sweet bars hidden down lane ways, cheap booze and food, coffee shops, lane ways, cool girls, bikes, an amazing city centre, and best of all people smile and chat in the street...

it simply rocks and i am a english mirgrant... sydney is a hell hole that has been modeled around the plastic credit card!!

Bikes: Various by application

Speaking of Sydney, there is a raffle in Toronto to send 2 more people to Sydney to race at the CMWC. The grrl winner won her plane ticket on a fixed gear too!

The odds are still great, 2 track framesets & a thousand bucks in other loot, all you need for a shot at it is a ticket which you can buy online here;

https://www.messmedia.org/globalgutz/index.html

All the prizes include Free shipping eh? We could use a few more clickety-clicks to ensure a few more racers at CMWC.

Bikes: some- variety is good..

Hi Tairaku

Both options are useful.. If you´re planning on working on your bike- take a trackbike, with a roadfork and a frontbrake..

Uuuhhhh Im going soon..

See you all there..

Bikes: 11 track, one dualie and 3 ladies bikes.

'Roger' the brake. Sydney has some seriously sharp ascents and descents.

I'd take a mountain bike for the trail riding you could do.

There is an outdoor track in Tempe, and the indoor Dunc Gray Velodrome.

Melburn is better, but like most lessons in life, you've gotta learn the hard way.

Sydney has a well organised messenger crew who are keen cyclists outside of work.

The weekend after the CMWC is the Australian Singlespeed Champs - the week in between is the Bike Film Festival.

See you in Sydney!

I'm not going with Sydney. My ultimate destination is Hobart. I'm just going to hang around in Sydney for a while doing business until my house is built in Tassie. That's why I'm only bringing one bike, the others will be in a container bound for Hobart.

Thanks for the replies everybody!

2nd that motion. I avoid it as much as possible. Its a complete **** up now, you cant get anywhere. The trains are ****ed completely and the buses are ****. Yeah if you take the fixie bring a brake, low gears, a sense of how to avoid potholes, and some good comebacks. Drivers are crazy, and extremely rude and arrogrant.

Bikes: pink Masi time trial & blue Cannondale track

Both my cages broke in Australia and I did not have a brake. It was sketchy as all hell. But once I got some cages and a bit of a lighter gear (thanks to Lynn of CTA =), Sydney was super fun.

In terms of hills - think Seattle/SF, or worse.

Don't forget to visit CTA and remember to keep on the left!
