i had an idea for a clips and straps specific shoe,

internal reinforcement on the top of the shoe designed to distribute the pressure of the strap across the top of the foot and to allow you to keep the straps tighter and maintain comfort,

removable "beams" that run through the center of the sole that can be slid out from the back of the heel and thrown in your bag when you want more flexibility in the sole.

make it look like any other low profile sneaker

is there any way at all that I could possibly get my hands on one of those now? Im about to sell my car and ride year round again and I plan on building a chopper over the winter. I dont think the old mechanics jacket is going to take the beating.

Possibly a stupid question, but are Amy Bolger and Kevin Bolger (Squid) related?

I'm not one for shameless coverage really, but I think these guys are doing a great job of bringing the coverage back to the community of messengers. Good work guys; just don't start buying Bentleys and spinnerzz.

That "removable beams" part sounds like a great idea. Maybe a removable plate though would be better. Can we patent this?

According to the website, there were only 20(!) made... but like my friend said before he bought a mechanical dancing skeleton from a hotdog vendor, "Everything has a price."

i remember there was a shoe made by nike (i think) that had
a removable insert for the outer sole that could be exchanged
for a harder or softer heal.

an interchangable plate, as suggested by enlacalle, would be ideal.
(now puma just needs to step in...)

I don't know how much pull the bike messenger team
has with Puma, but if you could somehow persuade
them that making an attractive SPD-compatible bike
shoe would be in their interest, I think we would all
be eternally greatful.

There are dozens of attractive SPD-compatible bike shoes out there. We don't need Puma to make one, cuz Adidas are already making a ****load of better ones than Puma ever could. Just sayin'

There's also Specialized and shimano with a couple of nice pieces etc.

I couldn't find a pic of the nicest ones, BTW. One of the 2006 Adidas' is super sexxy

i have prescription orthotics that i stick in my shoes for arch support. they seem to work for providing stiffness as well. dunno if the drugstore kind would work or not but it's a thought.

puma has been a sponsor for other pro cyclist and still have yet to make a spd shoe. I remember seeing pics of April Lawyer who was sponsored by puma put tape on her spd shoes and sharpie puma logos on them.

Puma also has their hands in Nascar. Dale Jr. wears their racing gloves and shoes. They were also featured in that Talladega Nights movie.

Marketing...

yeah, but the point was one could remove/install
the stiffening device without removing the shoe.

None of those look like regular street shoes, though. I want some that are like, "What? No ****ing way! Let me see the bottom."

Diadora. Not the most attractive things, but they look like regular street shoes.

as far as cool looking SPD shoes, I think adidas should start making something like these again:

I think there were 20 available in NY at a store in the LES and 20 available in SF through HUF. I tried one on in NYC last christmas, but the smallest size they had was a Medium. Had it fit I probably would've bought it as it was a really nice cycling jacket - it seemed like it would've been great in the winter muck. The air filter thing is admittedly gimmicky, but I like gimmicks. Sue me.

Those all rely on lace closures which suck.
Whats needed is.
-stiff as ****(walking in a stiff shoe isn't that bad)
-soft rubber on the bottom for traction
-good closure system
-tolerable looks.

If you just want something that looks normal get some of the bmx style spds that just look like skate shoes with slightly thicker soles.
