The powdercoater I use offers a clear coat option for a few more bucks. If you want to clear it yourself, ask the coater what type of finish to use so you don't ruin the basecoat.

that is fantastic advice. i never would have thought to consider what the base was when choosing a clear. awesome answer, that advice is going to come in handy this winter.

Yeah, the thing is I want to detail it and then clear coat over it so it would be another couple weeks to send it back to the guy and have him do it. But maybe it's worth it.

Again if you are going to put any other type of finish on the powder you have to make sure it is compatible with the base and clear. If you use 2 incompatible finishes together it will likely bubble and ruin the job. I assume you are thinking about pinstriping the lugs or something similar. The coater can instruct you as to what would be compatible.

the really nice thing about going with a color like grey -- or other more basic colors -- is that you can usually find ultradurable industrial/outdoor use powdercoats. i went with a Tiger Drylac series 38 "Ultra Durable" deal (www.tiger.at). That plus the clearcoat resulted in a ********ly strong finish.

I have clear-coated (with powder clear coat) a powdercoat, mainly to expose the lugs. As somebody with much better understanding than mine wrote here, there is rust creeping under the clear-coat on the lugs, starting from the edges.
You can compare fresh job to its recent state .
