shims for stems

Ok I'm about to shim a Thompson 1&1/8" stem to a 1" unthreaded fork. Does anyone have any experience doing this? Will the stem slip? I'm having trouble finding decent 1" threadless stems so I figured this would be the best option. Share some advice.

Not with Thompson, but I am using the Cinelli Vai stem shimmed from 1 1/8" to fit my 1" inch threadless fork. I have had no problems with it slipping at all. My stem came with shim included. Just make sure when you are fitting everything together that you make it snug as possible without causing it to bind. Not really too big of a deal.

1" threadless stems are more or less extinct. The shim works fine, however. My LBS has a box full, and I can usually grab one for free or near free.

I use a shimmed Ritchey pro (Well, I've used 3 different Ritchey stems by now...) on a 1" steerer. Zero problems, though I've only had it since july.

awesome. Yeah I have an older 1" threadless steamroller. I love the frame but hate the curent stem I have and couldn't find any decent options. Thanks for the advice I'm going to pull the trigger on the thompson.

there's a specific shim for the older thomson stems with the integrated clamp, might want to look for that.

there is no need whatsoever to use a thompson specific shim. I used just a normal shim and eveything was super tight and great.

just adding my voice to the chorus - done it several times, never a problem. huge clamp area and relatively little force hitting it. have at it with confidence

I'm running the Thompson Elite X2 on my Soma with the shim. The thing is, the shim is a bit too tall for their newer stems (X2 and X4), since it wasn't designed for them. You'll either have to shave it down a bit, run a spacer above the stem, or try another shim.

When I emailed them directly about it, they apologized and told me to make sure the trimmed shim was burr-free, or just to try the Problem Solvers shim.

PS, there's a crapload of Cinelli Alters up on Ebay now. Probably the coolest 1" stem ever made, if you can handle the steep drop.
