Schwinn Conversion?

I have a Schwinn Le Tour and I am interested in converting into a fixie. I am new to this and don't even know where to begin. I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions/advice on parts. I've read several places that it is possible to do a conversion using the standard crankset and rear wheel, but is this smart?
