Flippable Tandem
I have been obsessed with the idea of flipping a tandem ever since Juvi-Kyle brought up the idea a long time ago. Every time I see a tandem, I imagine how it could be flipped. A lot I'm convinced are unflippable in their current state: Old beach-cruiser tandems with just a coaster brake, brakeless track tandems, etc. The only way to flip those would be to hit something with enough force to stop you, and the front wheels aren't strong enough to transmit all your forward momentum into torque about the front wheel.
But at last, I found it. The ultimate flipping tandem: http://classifieds.mtbr.com/classifi...w.107882.1.jpg More info here. Why is it the ultimate? Dual 180mm (or even 200mm) disc brakes on the front wheel. Long travel fork. And super-strong wheels. I so want to flip this thing. |

my god did someone waste a lot of money on that...
i don't see how being the stoker on a tandem would be any fun at all. |
Wow, those BB's are seriously high.
I guess a real daredevil could flip this one (Do you mean with or w/o stoker?). Find a swimming pool with a 2' ledge around it. Go at it and slam on the brakes on the last yard. Something must happen  Tough luck for the stoker, though. |
aeroplane, this is the best idea you have ever had.
edit: well i suppose the idea was juvi's, but you totally figured out how to make it happen. |
turn the shock preload and damping down to the lowest settings. that way you'll get lots of fork dive when you grab that front brake. As an added bonus when the shock rebounds it should pitch you hard in whatever direction you happen to be pointing. Sounds like a Super Dave Osbourn stunt to me.

I can see this being the next big thing in cycling. Tandem flipping contest, mmmm Get Red Bull to sponsor it. The team with the stokers that travel the most distance from the point of flip is the winner!
|
I'll accept this as an olympic sport if the stoker wears a bird costume

man that intense isnt **** compared to this nicolai.

Why does the quick reply automatically supersize everything? Arrgh!

Wait.. front flip?
Who the heck does front flips. The only front brake induced front flips I've seen pulled successfully were on a BMX modified with a 'roll cage' . |
I know a guy who flipped a tandem...on E-bay. He found that sucker at a junkyard. Pure profit!
|
a lot of BMXers do front flips now. well not a lot, but some.

Weld two beams in a half oval. When it flips, tuck your head, and keep your weight centered. with enough luck to survive the first few attempts, you might jsut be able to ride out of it. |

Wait...this is a MTB Tandem Jackass stunt thread?
Aeroplane, you have made history. Most uncatagorizable bike topic. But if you really want maximum flippage, put a fat guy in the front. |
RyanD, I'm aware that the front flip is widely used in the BMX world over box jumps.. but everyone in this thread seemed to be talking about using the front brake to initiate the flip.
..and Mattface.. heres the roll cage bike: http://bikerodnkustom3.homestead.com/rollerbike.html edit:..and lets not forget the bikerfox front flip.. |
yeah, get bikerfox to be the stoker and you're set.
