Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Surly Dingle cogs

Any estimate on when these'll come out?

$45? That seems a little steep...

Considering a single surly cog is $26 and you're essentially buying two cogs in one, $45 makes sense to me.

Bikes: yes

is this gonna be like a white industries double freewheel, except a track cog?

so, flip flop for people w/o duplex-style hubs.

chainline.

interesting though. real easy - 15mm wrench, loosen nuts, push chain, pull back, tighten nuts.

is your difference in chainline so minimal that it's not a problem?

Nice crank, stupidly proprietary chainrings. Oh well.

Because the gear you ride to get to the dirt is higher than the gear you want to ride on the dirt. Makes sense to me.

Actually, for me it's a matter of changing gearing depending on what I'm doing. If I'm hauling weight in a trailer, I like a smaller gear.

my comment was a knee jerk response to the thought of a double cog and a double crankset (wierdo4spd?) that had to be adjusted by hand to change ratio. like ' f u ck didnt they come up with a solution 100+yrs ago.

does seem less figity than a flip flop wheel

Yeah, when you pair it with a double chainring thing (whatever the **** that is) it's pretty ridiculous.

are the chainrings held together by a lockring?

No way, it's the double chainring that makes it even more awesome - if you do it right, you use the same amount of chain for both combos and never have to readjust your rear brake pads.

I didn't say it was stupid. Just ridiculous.

As long as you mean 'ridiculously awesome' we can still avoid bloodshed.

(personally, I save my double cranks for the 3-speeds)

my friend has something like that set up on his cyclocross bike. white industries makes a double freewheel cog, and he has a double in front.

It seems excessive at first glance, but the more I think about it, (in the SS-CX fashion), the more amazing this idea becomes.

exactly why i want one. i've got a fixed/free rear wheel, and if this cog works out chainline wise at all, it's a whole lot cheaper than a decent wheel.
